إن اعتبرته فَنُون

إن اعتبرته فَنُون

What animal has in its name,

No creature in its name,

if you ponder it, subtle arts?

If you consider it arts,

أحرفه ثلاثةٌ

والكلُّ منها هو نون

والكلُّ منها هو نون

Its letters are three,

and together they mean nūn—a fish.

And the whole of it is noon.

إن أنت صَحَّفتَ اسمه

فما جَنَاهُ المذنبون

Or the quality of the sad soul.

قَلب اسمه مصحَّفا

is one over whom the years have rolled.

The years revolved around it.
