The fruit of letters and a cultivated nature,
The fruit of learning and a refined nature,
whose range in eloquence stretched far and wide;
That extended its reach in eloquence and broadened it.
ولاnor مثلanything like بِكرٍa virgin maiden باكرتنيcame to me early آنفاjust now
ولا مثل بِكرٍ باكرتني آنفا
كزورةlike a visit خلa dear friend بعدماafter كانhe had أعرضاturned away
كزورة خل بعدما كان أعرضا
nothing compares to the virgin poem that came early to me just now,
Nor is there anything like a maiden who came to me early, just now,
like a dear friend’s visit after he had kept away.
Like a dear friend's visit after he had turned away.

هي الروضة الغناء أينع زهرها
تناظرrivals حسناًbeauty مُذهباًgilded مفضضاsilvered

It is the luxuriant garden, its flowers come into bloom,
It is the luxuriant garden, its blossoms in full bloom,
vying in gilded and silvered beauty;
Rivalling gilded and silvered beauty.
أوor الغادةthe graceful maiden الحسناءbeautiful راقتwas pleasing فينقضيso elapses
أو الغادة الحسناء راقت فينقضي
مدىthe span العمرof life فيin وصفيmy description لهاof her وماand not ارتضىwas satisfied
مدى العمر في وصفي لها وما ارتضى
or the lovely, graceful maiden who so charms that
Or the beautiful maiden who charms; and so there passes
a lifetime would end as I described her, yet my description would never suffice.
A lifetime in my description of her, yet without satisfaction.
