هي النفسُ إن أنتَ سامَحتَهَا

هي النفسُ إن أنتَ سامَحتَهَا

رَمَت بكَ أقصَى مَهَاوِي الخَدِيعة

رَمَت بكَ أقصَى مَهَاوِي الخَدِيعة

Such is the soul: if you indulge it,

The soul, if you forgive it

it hurls you into the deepest abysses of deceit.

It will aim for the deepest valleys of deception

وإن أنتَ جشَّمتَهَا خُطَّةً

وإن أنتَ جشَّمتَهَا خُطَّةً

تُنافي رضاها تَجِدهَا مُطِيعَة

تُنافي رضاها تَجِدهَا مُطِيعَة

And if you make it undertake a course

And if you admonish it with flaws

contrary to its liking, you will find it obedient.

It will defy your contentment, yet you'll find it obedient

فإن شِئتَ فوزاً فناقِض هَوَاهَا

فإن شِئتَ فوزاً فناقِض هَوَاهَا

وإن واصَلَتكَ أجِزهَا القطيعة

وإن واصَلَتكَ أجِزهَا القطيعة

So if you desire success, oppose its desires;

So if you want success, oppose its passions

and if it maintains ties with you, repay it with estrangement.

And if it accompanies you, reward it with separation

ولا تعبأنَّ بميعادها

ولا تعبأنَّ بميعادها

فميعادُها كسرَابٍ بقِيعَة

فميعادُها كسرَابٍ بقِيعَة

And pay no heed to its promise,

Pay no heed to its tryst

for its promise is like a mirage on an open plain.

For its tryst is a mirage in the desert
