هيفاء تخلطُ بالنّفار دَلالها
She visited, proudly trailing her skirts.
Slender-waisted, she mixes her coquetry with aloofness.
فالشمسso the sun منfrom حسدenvy لهاof her مصفرّةٌyellowed
فالشمس من حسد لها مصفرّةٌ
إذsince قصّرَتit fell short عنof أنto تكونbe مثالهاher equal
إذ قصّرَت عن أن تكون مثالها
So the sun is yellow with envy of her,
since it fell short of being her equal.
وافتكshe came to you تمزجُmixing لينهاher tenderness بقساوةٍwith harshness
وافتك تمزجُ لينها بقساوةٍ
قدhad أدرجتshe tucked طيّwithin the folds of العتابreproach نوالهاher favors
قد أدرجت طيّ العتاب نوالها
She came to you, mixing her tenderness with harshness;
she had tucked her favors into the folds of reproach.
كمhow often رمتshe sought كتمto conceal مزارهاher visit لكنّهyet it
كم رمت كتم مزارها لكنّه
صحَّتproved sound دلائلُproofs لمnot تُطقshe could إعلالهاdiscrediting them
صحَّت دلائلُ لم تُطق إعلالها
How often she sought to conceal her visit! Yet
the evidence was sound, and she could not discredit it.
تركتshe left علىacross الأرجاءthe surroundings عندduring سيرهاher walking
تركت على الأرجاء عند سيرها
أرَجاًa fragrance كأنّas though المسكَmusk فُتَّwas crumbled خلالهاthroughout them
أرَجاً كأنّ المسكَ فُتَّ خلالها
She left about the place, as she walked,
a fragrance, as though musk had been crumbled throughout it.
ماnot واصلتكshe granted you union محبةًout of love وتفضُّلاًand generosity
ما واصلتك محبةً وتفضُّلاً
لوif كانit were ذاكthat لواصلتshe would have continued إفضالهاher bounty
لو كان ذاك لواصلت إفضالها
She did not grant you union out of love and generosity;
had that been so, she would have continued her bounty.
لكنbut توقعتshe expected السلوّforgetting love فجددتso she renewed
لكن توقعت السلوّ فجددت
لكfor you لوعةًa burning longing لاnot تتقيyou guard against ترحالهاher departure
لك لوعةً لا تتقي ترحالها
But she expected you to forget her, so she renewed
a burning longing in you, with no defense against her departure.
حسنّتshe beautified نظمthe composition of الشعرpoetry فيin أوصافهاdescriptions of her
حسنّت نظم الشعر في أوصافها
إذas قبّحتshe made ugly لكto you فيin الهوىlove أفعالهاher deeds
إذ قبّحت لك في الهوى أفعالها
She lent beauty to the poetry describing her,
even as she made her conduct in love ugly to you.
ياO حُسنbeauty of ليلةthe night of وصلهاunion with her ماwhat ضرّهاwould harm her
يا حُسن ليلة وصلها ما ضرّها
لوif أتبعتshe followed it with منfrom بعدهاafter it أمثالهاothers like it
لو أتبعت من بعدها أمثالها
How lovely the night of union with her! What harm would it do her
if she followed it afterward with other nights like it?
لماwhen سكرتyou grew drunk بريقهاon her saliva وجنونهاand her madness
لما سكرت بريقها وجنونها
أهملتyou neglected كأسكَyour cup لمnot تُردyou wished إعمالهاto put it to use
أهملت كأسكَ لم تُرد إعمالها
When you grew drunk on her saliva and her madness,
you neglected your cup, not wishing to put it to use,
فيin جنةa garden تجلوunveiling محاسنهاits beauties كماjust as
في جنة تجلو محاسنها كما
تجلوunveils العروسthe bride لدىat الزفافthe wedding جَمَالَهاher beauty
تجلو العروس لدى الزفاف جَمَالَها
in a garden unveiling its beauties, just as
a bride unveils her beauty at the wedding.
شكرتit thanked أياديfavors للحياfrom the rain شكرthe thanking of الورىhumankind
شكرت أيادي للحيا شكر الورى
شرفthe glory of الملوكkings همامهاtheir valiant one مفضالهاtheir generous one
شرف الملوك همامها مفضالها
It thanked the rain for its favors, as people thank
the glory of kings, their valiant and generous one.
