هوit is البينparting ظَناas I judge لاnot لَعَلَّperhaps وَلاnor عَسَىmaybe
فماwhy then بالُis the matter with نَفسيmy soul لمnot تفِضoverflow عندَهat it أسىsorrow
It is parting, as I judge—not 'perhaps' or 'maybe.'
He is truly lost, no "perhaps" or "maybe"
Why, then, has my soul not overflowed with sorrow at it?
So why does my soul not overflow with sorrow near him?
وَماand why لفؤاديwith my heart لمnot يَذُبmelt مِنهُfrom it حسرةًanguish
فتبّاًso perdition لهذاupon this القلبheart سُرعانَhow quickly ماthat نَسىit forgot
And why has my heart not melted in anguish because of it?
Why does my heart not melt with regret from him?
Damn this heart—how swiftly it forgot!
Cursed is this heart, so quick to forget!
وماand why لجفونيwith my eyelids لاnot تفيضُpour forth مورداًrose-red
منَof الدمعِtears يَهمِيpours down تارةًat one time ومورّساand dyed yellow
And why do my eyelids not overflow with a rose-red stream
Why do my eyelids not flow as a spring
of tears, pouring at one time, and dyed yellow at another?
Of tears now boiling, now tranquil?
وماand why للسانيwith my tongue مُفصِحاًspeaking clearly بخطابهin its speech

وماand not كانwould it be لوif أوفىit kept faith بَعَهدٍwith a pledge لِيَنبساto utter a word
And why is my tongue articulate in its speech?
Why does my tongue not eloquently speak
Had it honored a pledge, it would not have uttered a word.
Words it would have uttered had it kept its vow?

Is it after I laid my soul in the earth,
After I buried my soul in the dust
and reduced a piece of my own heart to ashes in a grave,
And cast away the apple of my heart as carrion,

After the parting of my son Abu al-Qasim, who
clothed me in bereavement—may it never be a garment!—
Dressed me in the raiment of bereavement, not what I would have worn,

Can I hope for life in this world and be content
with a noonday rest beside its dwellings and a night's lodging?
With its tents, when my verses and dwellings are desolate?
فآهٍah, then وللمفجوعand for the bereaved فيهاin it استراحةrelief

Ah! In a sigh the bereaved find relief,
Alas! There is no rest for the grieving one within it,
and one with an ailing chest must draw breath.
No escape for the troubled breast except to gasp for air.

Over a lifetime in which I exhausted my wares,
I spent my life fruitlessly, wasting my goods,
which delivered me to the grave, bewildered and bankrupt.
So surrender me to the grave, lost and penniless.

I remained throughout it heedless and ignorant,
I tarried in heedlessness and ignorance
until it shot the arrow of parting and struck its mark.
Until the arrow of parting shot forth and hit its mark.

To God I complain of my grief's torment—for
I complain to God of the intensity of my sorrow,
my heart has clothed itself in all the grief it has taken on—
Which has overwhelmed my heart and fully possessed it.

فماso not أغنَتavailed الشكوىcomplaint ولاnor نفعَhelped الأساconsolation
and of the shock of a calamity that assailed me one evening;
The blows of fate struck me one evening,
neither complaint availed nor consolation helped.
So neither complaining availed me nor caring was of use.
فقدfor indeed صدَّعتit shattered شمليmy wholeness وأصمتand mortally struck مَقاتليmy vital parts

It shattered my wholeness and dealt my vitals a deadly blow,
They split my family asunder and silenced my fighters;
and demolished my solid, firmly founded pillar.
They demolished my firm, well-founded pillar.

I stood firm before it in patience against the force of its blow;
I showed it patience in the face of its impact,
it did not shake my beautiful patience, firmly anchored.
So my beautiful patience was not shaken once firmly rooted.

Yet it has a fire whose fuel flares up;
But it has a fire fueled from within,
because of it I pass a snake-bitten man's night, beset by anxious thoughts.
Disturbing my peaceful night with whispers.

I hope that through His mercy we shall find His favor,
I hope we will meet with His pleasure and acceptance,
and fear that a sin may bring us misery and cast us down.
I fear we will suffer from a sin and be debased.

Abu al-Qasim, hear the lament of your father, who
O Abu al-Qasim, hear the complaint of your father,
has drunk from parting's cups the most dreadful draught he ever drank.
Who has tasted from the cups of separation the most bitter of draughts.
وقفتُI dedicated فؤاديmy heart مذsince رحلتَyou departed علىto الأسىsorrow
فأشهدُso I bear witness لاnot ينفكَceases to be وقفاًan endowment محبَّساheld in perpetuity
Since you departed, I have dedicated my heart to sorrow;
Since you left, I have dedicated my heart to sorrow—
so I bear witness: it remains an inalienable endowment.
Be witness that it will not cease, a heart held captive!
وقطّعتُand I severed أماليmy hopes منfrom النَّاسpeople كلِّهِمall of them
فلستُso I do not أباليcare أحسنَdid good المرءُa person أمor أساdid ill
And I have severed my hopes from all mankind;
I have cut off all hopes in other people,
so I care not whether a man does good or ill.
Caring not whether one treats me well or ill.
تواريتَyou vanished ياO شَمسِيmy sun وبدرِيand my full moon وناظِرِيand my eye
فصارَso became وجوديmy existence مُذsince تواريتَyou vanished حِندساdeep darkness
You have vanished, O my sun, my full moon, and my eye;
You were my sun, my moon, my eyes—
so my existence, since you vanished, has become deepest darkness.
Since you hid, my existence has been darkness.
وخلَّفتand you left ليfor me عبئاًa burden منof الثَّكلِbereavement فادِحاًcrushing
فماthen how أتعبweary الثَّكلانِthe bereaved parent نَفساًin soul واتعساand wretched
You left me a crushing burden of bereavement;
You left me with a heavy burden of grief,
how weary in soul, how wretched, is the bereaved parent!
Nothing wearies the soul and makes it more wretched than bereavement.
فياso O غُصناًa bough نضراًfresh and green ذوىwithered عندماwhen استوىgrew to fullness
فأوحشنيso it made me lonely أضعافَmany times ماwhat كانit had أنَّساgiven comfort
O verdant bough that withered just as it grew to fullness,
O you fresh, verdant branch, when you straightened up you deserted me,
leaving me a loneliness many times greater than the comfort it once gave!
Leaving me lonelier by multiples than when you gave me company.
ياO نعمةًa blessing لمّاwhen تبلّغتهاI attained it انقضتit ended
فأنعَمُso the happiest of أحواليmy states بماعادthrough what has come to pass أبأساmost wretched
O blessing that ended just as I attained it,
O blessing, when I attained you, you vanished,
so my happiest state has thereby become my most wretched!
Improving my state by what has become most miserable.
فودعتهso I bade him farewell والدمعُwhile tears يَهميpours down سحابهits cloud
كماjust as أسلمreleased السلكthe string الفريدthe choice pearls المجنَّساarranged by kind
So I bade him farewell as the cloud of tears poured down,
I bade you farewell as tears poured down,
as a string lets go its choice pearls, arranged by kind.
Like liquid poured from a precious, molded vessel.
وقبَّلتُand I kissed فيon ذاكَthat الجبينbrow مودَّعاًbidding farewell

And I kissed that brow, bidding farewell
I kissed that brow farewell
to one dearer to me than my own soul, and more precious.
To one more precious to me than my soul and my breath.

If this death would accept a ransom,
If only this death would accept a ransom—
we would have lavished on it precious wealth and lives.
We would ransom him with wealth, generosity, and souls.

But it is a binding decree from God;
But it is a decree from God that must be,
whoever follows the best of mankind submits to it.
To which the best of mortals must submit.

May the Merciful cover you in pardon and acceptance,

And hallow your splendid abode to sanctify it!

so we may drink from Tasnim and wear fine silk.
To drink in the zephyr and wear silk.
