I swear my eye has never seen her equal,

I swear my eyes have never seen her equal,

In truth—I do not say my gaze is bewitched.

Truly, I do not say my gaze is enchanted.

أرعى النجوم وما بي غير نسبتها

أرعى النجوم وما بي غير نسبتها

والشيء بالشيء مرعيّ ومذكورُ

والشيء بالشيء مرعيّ ومذكورُ

I watch the stars, moved only by her kinship with them;

I tend the stars and mine is but their mention,

And one thing is watched and mentioned through another.

One thing is tended through another, as known.

كَنّيتُ عنها بذكر النجم تورية

كَنّيتُ عنها بذكر النجم تورية

وفي الكناية إجمال وتفسيرُ

وفي الكناية إجمال وتفسيرُ

I alluded to her by mentioning the star, with a double meaning;

I used the stars to subtly speak of her,

And in allusion lie both brevity and explanation.

In allusion is a hint and explanation.
