I pose you a riddle: what is the name of a thing

That charms with its beauty when described?

محاسن شتّى

محاسن شتّى

منها فرادى ومثنى

منها فرادى ومثنى

Beauties of many kinds,

Some single, some in pairs,

له بل الشعرُ أثنى

له بل الشعرُ أثنى

Belong to it; indeed, poetry has praised it.

مهما تَنَلهُ بحذفٍ

مهما تَنَلهُ بحذفٍ

أتاك حرفاً لمعنى

أتاك حرفاً لمعنى

Whenever you subject it to deletion,

It yields you a meaningful particle.

إن زال أوّلُ حرفٍ

إن زال أوّلُ حرفٍ

زال الذي منهُ يعنَى

زال الذي منهُ يعنَى

If the first letter is removed,

What is meant by it is gone.

أو زالَ ثانيهِ منهُ

أو زالَ ثانيهِ منهُ

فالقتلُ أدهى وأفنى

فالقتلُ أدهى وأفنى

Or if its second is removed from it,

Then killing is more dreadful and more destructive.

أو زال ثالثه فه

أو زال ثالثه فه

و لَغوُ صَبٍّ معنى

و لَغوُ صَبٍّ معنى

Or if its third is removed, then it

Is the idle talk of a tormented lover.

فأوضحِ القصدَ يا مَن

فأوضحِ القصدَ يا مَن

قد فاق عَقلاً وذهنا

قد فاق عَقلاً وذهنا

So make the intent clear, O you

Who have excelled in reason and intellect.
