God has willed that the upper hand shall belong

to al-Andalus, without condition or exception.

Even if calamities have bitten her with their fangs,

and turned the honey gathered there to bitter colocynth,

yet she has never lacked people of eloquence and wisdom,

who uphold there the established ways of religion and worldly life.

When they preach, they deliver every kind of eloquent address

that illuminates veiled hearts and sightless eyes.

And when they compose verse, they bring forth every marvel:

you would think the radiant stars its ornaments.

So in this world I ask God for His concealing veil

over us—and in the next, when the meeting comes.
