منه إلى نحوِ العدوِّ نهودُ
From every tall, lean steed, stout of limb,
From every fading breast that yearns for love
comes a charge toward the enemy.
Towards the foe it sends its sighs thereof

يرمي رجيمٌ من عداكَ مريدُ
From a gray steed, like a meteor, by whose fire
From one whose hue is like a fading spark
an accursed rebel among your foes is struck.
A stalwart youth darts arrows at each mark

And it seems to have wrapped itself in morning as a mantle,
As though the morn had clothed him with her light
so its shirt is cut from the morning's light.
His shirt with rays of glory is bedight

Amid the sons of Ham he would be sought

Or fair though languid as a dim starved fawn
its neck were the very neck of a gazelle.
Gazelles would envy him that delicate form

Gold is its color, and chrysolite its hoof;
Pure crystal seems his skin, chrysolite his toe
the hue of cheeks adorned with a rosy blush.
His blushing cheeks would make carnelians glow

Or a chestnut steed, like lightning in color and in
Or blond as lightning in his face and pace
speed—what a splendid, sought-after prize!
Well sought the youth whom fortune deigns to grace
