    تتجاذَبُ الأشواقُ فيه قُلُوبَا

    An Eid has overtaken you, a stranger among the sands;

    During it, longings tug hearts in different directions.

    يتطارحون من الشجونِ ضُروبَا

    So I see my loved ones that day through the virgin’s eye;

    They exchange all manner of sorrows.

    Scarcely a moment does agonizing longing linger

    Before it passes to them and returns.

    You see it as a lightning-flash: in no time

    It swept the north in radiance and lit the south.

    It kindled a blaze from a rising sigh,

    So tears poured in torrents because of it.

    بلَّغت منها قَصدِيَ المرغوبَا

    You reminded me, O Eid, of Eids gone by;

    Through them you fulfilled my cherished aim.

    So you gathered the loved ones, binding them together,

    And donned a splendid new cloak of joy.

    And you opened wide a door to glad tidings,

    And bent down the tender branch of nearness.

    O my master, luminary among judges, receive these verses:

    I have found ample scope for speech.

    O heir to al-Rida through learning and lineage,

    You indeed have the greatest share among his heirs.

    So I sent it to renew the bond that

    Has always been upheld, in presence and in absence.

    I swear I have never seen a virtuous man like you,

    Possessing both inherited and earned distinction.

    I bear you sincere love, through which I shall find

    With the Messenger a cheerful welcome and a place near him.

    The place of visitation is far; ask not of estrangement

    That has left a heart desolate and overturned it.

    And upon you, O essence of perfection, a greeting,

    Like musk that has filled the pathways with fragrance.
