Who will help a lovesick man who heeds no reproach,

worn thin by two cups—of love and wine?

He returned from longing's burning anguish with the

cup, and left reproach to the reproachers.

O my two drinking companions, do not sleep and miss the

wine, nor wait for the darkness to lift.

The striking of bells roused me to a morning draught,

and the whispered converse of a dove and doves.

So serve me a morning draught of wine before dawn,

a tart wine mixed with water from the clouds.

And stop by the dwellings at

al-Qufṣ, and wail the lament of one distraught with love.
