1. أي ديباجة حسنِ

    هيجت لوعة حزني

    What a silken countenance of beauty

    has stirred the anguish of my grief,

  2. إذ رماني القمرُ الزا

    هر عن فترةِ جفنِ

    when the radiant moon shot at me

    from a languid eyelid!

  3. بأبي شمسُ نهارٍ

    برزت في يوم دجنِ

    May my father ransom that daytime sun

    that emerged on a day of gloom!

  4. قربتني بالمُنى حت

    تَى إذا ما أخلفتني

    She drew me near with hopes until,

    when she broke her promise to me,

  5. تركتني بين ميعا

    دٍ وخلفٍ وتجني

    she left me between a promise

    and its breach, and unjust blame.

  6. ما أراني لي من الصبو

    ةِ إلا حسن ظني

    I see nothing for me in infatuation

    but my good opinion of her.

  7. إنما دامت على الغد

    رِ لما تعرفُ مني

    She persisted in treachery only

    because of what she knows of me.

  8. أستعيذ اللَه من إعراضِ

    من أعرض عني

    I seek refuge in God from the rejection

    of one who turned away from me.
