O you whose glance is magic,

    and whose saliva is wine,

I grew bold and spoke frankly

to you, when patience was overcome.

    And how lovely, in one

like you, for the veil to be torn!

    And if people blame me,

in your face I have an excuse.

    So spare me the promises

of yours, since Time has doomed you.

No, by God, you shall not

leave until the matter is settled.

    Either force and reproach,

    or willing giving and gratitude.

And if you wished, you would be accommodating,

as your name suggests, O Yusr.

And live up to your name; let not

haughtiness and arrogance hold you back.

Then may I not win my share from

you, if any mention of it spreads.

    Word reached me about you

whose unpleasantness could not be endured.

So I deliberately turned a blind eye,

and a noble youth may turn a blind eye.

And I disciplined you by shunning you,

but estrangement did not discipline you.

Nor were you turned from your ways

    by counsel and rebuke.

Then, when the unpleasantness left me no choice,

and the matter grew severe for me,

I assailed you with some harm of mine,

    with something of little account.

So you stirred the wing of abasement

    when harm touched you.

    If goodness does not reform

    a man, evil reforms him.
