O you who blow upon knots,

    I am wrapped in grief.

You merely gilded deceptions for me

That gnawed at soul and body.

Give me, deceiver, a single one

Of the many things you said—and that is enough for me.

Would that I knew, after you swore to me

To keep your pledge the day after tomorrow,

What, by God, has placed it—

Once so near—in the far reaches of eternity?

Why has the intimacy once freely given

By you to me yesterday not returned?

Go on, tell me without reserve:

Has anyone wronged me where you are concerned?

How sweet, while the cup went round,

Our revels, and the pursuit of game!

And talk that had, within our hearts,

    Spells that rent the liver.

When you gave me the cup and took it back,

Apart from my drinking companions, hand to hand.

Then when you turned aside, I was stirred

By the lofty neck of a gazelle of the land.

And when you leaned close, I was reminded

    By camphor's fragrance upon hailstones.

That was a day when our envier

    Was excused for his envy.
