May God water, at al-Qatul, the ground where your gaze roams,

and favor your palace’s flanks with His rain.

For francolins within its bounds, death’s hour comes,

and for coots—fated ends decreed by your hand:

deadly fates, keen-cutting when you direct them,

swift when you spur them on with the cries of you both.

You made doves fair game, ascending and descending,

yet in neither case left your seat of pleasure.

There you alternate between a flute and a singer,

and wine cooled by the north wind, served to you by a gazelle’s hand.

You fulfilled your desires while remaining encamped,

at ease, though your resolve ranged far.

    Only those at ease attain life’s sweetness;

no life won by your utmost toil is sweet.
