ولمand did not أرI see فيكمamong you منanyone who ييمunclear spelling; likely 'abides' علىby العهدِthe pledge
I loved you with all my strength, and went beyond it;
My being is my effort, and I have striven more,
yet I saw none among you who kept the pledge.
Yet I see not in you one who keeps their word.
فإنso if أمسِI become فيكمtoward you زاهداًindifferent بعدafter رغبةٍlonging
فبعدthen after اختيارٍa choice كانwas فيconcerning وصلكمcloseness with you زهديmy indifference
So if I grow indifferent to you after longing,
If yesterday I was ascetic among you after desire,
then my indifference to closeness with you came after a choice.
Then after choosing, my asceticism was in joining you.

تجرعنيmakes me swallow المكروهwhat is loathsome منfrom غصصchoking pangs الحقدِrancor
By my life, I have indeed turned a blind eye to that in you
By my life, I have been patient with you all,
which makes me swallow the bitterness of rancor's choking pangs.
Drinking the bitterness of rancor.
تأنيتكمI treated you patiently بقياforbearance الصديقof a friend لتقصدواso that you act fairly
وتأبونand you refuse إلاanything but أنto تجورواstray عنfrom القصدthe right course
I treated you patiently, with a friend's forbearance, so you might follow the right course,
I came to you with a true friend’s sincerity that you might be led aright,
yet you will do nothing but stray from that course.
Yet you refuse, unless you swerve from the right way.
تعزواconsole yourselves بيأسٍby giving up hope عنof هوايmy love فإننيfor indeed I
إذاwhen انصرفتturns away نفسيmy soul فهيهاتthen beyond reach منfrom رديbringing me back
Console yourselves by giving up hope of my love, for
You despair of my love, but I,
once my soul turns away, bringing me back is beyond reach.
If I turn away, never shall I return.
أبىrefused القلبthe heart إلاanything but نبوةًestrangement عنfrom جميعكمall of you
كنبوتكمlike your estrangement عنيfrom me ففيso into السحقِremoteness والبعدِand distance
My heart would accept nothing but estrangement from you all,
My heart consents only to eschew you all,
as you were estranged from me—so away with you, far away!
As you eschew me, so in remoteness and distance.
أرىI see الغدرtreachery ضداًan opposite للوفاءto fidelity وإننيand indeed I
لأعلمI surely know أنthat الضدthe opposite ينبوrecoils عنfrom الضدِّthe opposite
I see treachery as the opposite of fidelity, and I
I see betrayal opposite loyalty, yet I
know full well that one opposite recoils from the other.
Know opposites spring from opposites.
اذاif خنتمyou betrayed بالغيبin secret عهديmy pledge فمالكمthen why do you
تدلونyou presume إدلالwith the assurance المقيمِof one who abides علىby العهدِthe pledge
If you betrayed my pledge behind my back, why do you
If you betray my covenant in secret, why then
show the assurance of one who keeps the pledge?
Do you fawn like one keeping their word?
صلواkeep the bond وافعلواand act فعلthe action المدلِّof one who presumes بوصلهupon his closeness
وإلاand if not فصدواthen turn away وافعلواand act فعلthe action ذيof one possessing الصدِّestrangement
Keep the bond, and act like one who presumes upon his closeness;
Be faithful and act like one joined in friendship,
otherwise, turn away, and act like one who turns away.
Else turn away and act like one turned away.
وليand I have منكَapart from you بُدٌّan alternative فاجتنبنيso avoid me مذمماًdeserving blame
وانand even if خلتyou thought أنيthat I ليسthere is not ليfor me منكapart from you منany بدalternative
And I can do without you; so keep away from me, blameworthy as you are,
I have no choice but to avoid you,
even if you thought I could not do without you.
Even if you think I have no other choice.

How many had warned me about you before!
How many a warner have I been among you,
And here I am, warning those who come after me about you.
And here I am, a warner to those after me.
فواso, O أسفاmy sorrow! منfor صبوةٍa passionate attachment ضاعwas lost شُكرُهاgratitude for it

Alas for a passion that went unthanked,
Oh what regrets for a youth wasted,
spent as an advance, with neither reward nor praise.
Its gratitude lost, without wage or thanks.
