بمنfor one who لوif شكوتُI complained إليهto him رحِمhe showed mercy
I conceal my passion, yet it will not stay concealed,
I keep my love hidden, though it does not stay concealed
For one who would show mercy if I complained to him.
From one to whom, if I complained, he would show mercy.
وإنيand indeed I علىdespite حُسنِthe goodness of ظنِّيmy opinion بهof him

And despite my good opinion of him,
And yet, because of my good opinion of him,
I do fear that, if I confess, he may feel embarrassed.
I take care, if I speak openly, that he will be too shy.

And at his glance a fright seizes me,
In his glance there is a feeling for me
Confirming what the suspicious observer thought.
That proves the suspicions of the slanderer.

And people have learned that I am his
People know that I love him,
Lover—and I think he already knows.
And I believe he knows it too.

And with lowered eyes I bore an anguish
Yet I angrily suppress the pains
Of longing that blazed in my liver,
Of longing that flare up in my liver.
عشيةَon the evening ودعتُI bade farewell عنwith مقلةٍan eye
سفوحٍstreaming tears وزفرةِand a sigh قلبٍof a heart سدمgrief-stricken
On the evening I bade farewell with an eye
One evening I bid farewell at a refuse heap
Streaming tears, and the sigh of a grief-stricken heart.
To plains and to the sighs of a heart tightly closed.
فماso not كانthere was عندat النوىparting مسعدٌa comforter
سوىexcept الدمعtears يغسلُwashes طرفاًan eye كلمwounded
So at parting there was no comforter
There was none to wish us well at the halt
Save tears washing a wounded eye.
Except tears washing an eyelid held stiff.

Whoever has departed will remember his homelands,
He will remember one who left his homelands
And whoever did not stay will weep for those who remain.
And weep for those who did not depart.
