How much suffering the cat endured
With sighs followed by moans
And tears shed in sorrow
I am in Baghdad, utterly miserable
A stranger's lot is yearning and lament
O you who blame me, each day passes easily
To you from me, I am infatuated
My poetry is inferior and deficient
And it is time to stop provoking and appease it
Its masters are burdened by debts
Goods made obsolete by al-Ma'mun
