محارمُ من آل الرسول استحلتِ

محارمُ من آل الرسول استحلتِ

Among what has grieved my heart and makes my tears flow

Are the women of the Messenger's family, their sanctity violated;

ومهتوكة بالخلدِ عنها سجوفها

ومهتوكة بالخلدِ عنها سجوفها

كعابٌ كقرن الشمس حين تبدَّتِ

كعابٌ كقرن الشمس حين تبدَّتِ

And one at al-Khuld whose curtains were torn away—

A full-breasted maiden, like the sun's rim when it appeared.

إذا خفرتها روعةٌ من منازعٍ

لها المرط عادت بالخشوع ورنَّتِ

When fear abashed her before someone tugging

At her mantle, she shrank back in submission and wailed.

وسرب ظباءٍ من ذؤابةِ هاشمٍ

وسرب ظباءٍ من ذؤابةِ هاشمٍ

هتفن بدعوى خير حيٍّ وميتِ

هتفن بدعوى خير حيٍّ وميتِ

And a herd of gazelles from Hashim's noblest line

Cried out, invoking the best of the living and the dead.

أردُّ يداً مني إذا ما ذكرته

أردُّ يداً مني إذا ما ذكرته

على كبدٍ حرى وقلبٍ مفتَّتِ

على كبدٍ حرى وقلبٍ مفتَّتِ

Whenever I recall it, I bring my hand back

Upon a burning liver and a shattered heart.

فلا باتَ ليلُ الشامتين بغبطةٍ

فلا باتَ ليلُ الشامتين بغبطةٍ

ولا بلغت آمالُهم ما تمنتِ

ولا بلغت آمالُهم ما تمنتِ

So may the gloaters' night never pass in joy,

Nor may their hopes attain what they desired.
