فغدا الضنى من زيه

فغدا الضنى من زيه

Love for his namesake captivated him;

Love afflicted him, like an arrow

so wasting sickness became part of his garb.

So longing became his garb

فأصفر غضّ جنيه

فأصفر غضّ جنيه

And passion bore his heart down;

And passion filled his heart

so his tender fruit turned yellow.

And turned his rosy cheek pale

مثن على الملوين لا

مثن على الملوين لا

كشقيقه وسميه

كشقيقه وسميه

He praises night and day—not

He is unlike the twisted ones

like his brother and his namesake.

Like chicory and anise

حسب الزمان تفاؤلا

حسب الزمان تفاؤلا

بالخير من خيره

بالخير من خيره

He took Time as an auspicious omen

Let time bring good tidings

of good, from its bounty.

Of the best of his goodness

فاحثث كؤوس مدامه

تلق الليل بريه

So hasten the cups of his wine;

So pass around the wine cups

you will greet the night quenched by it.

To welcome night joyfully

A yellow wine, which the admixture adorned with a necklace

With necklaces of saffron

to buy her with its jewels.
