أَلاَlisten! أَبلِغَاconvey, you two هِنداًHind سَلامِيmy greetings وَإِنand even if نَأَتshe has gone far away
فَقَلبِيfor my heart بِهاbecause of her مُذsince شَطَّتِgrew distant الدَّارُthe dwelling مُدنَفُsick with love
Listen, you two: convey my greetings to Hind, though she is far away.
O messenger, convey my greetings to Hind, though she be far,
For my heart has been lovesick for her since her home grew distant.
For my heart has pined for her since the encampment moved on.
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see هِنداًHind بَعدَafter مَوقِفِa meeting سَاعَةٍa short while
بِأَنعَمَat Anʿam فيamong أهلِthe people of الدِّيَارِthe dwellings تُطَوِّفُshe wanders about
And I have not seen Hind since a brief meeting
I've not seen, since that moment we parted, a fairer woman,
At Anʿam, as she wandered among the people of the dwellings.
Gracefully strolling amongst her own folk.
أَتَتَshe came بَينَamong أَترَابٍcompanions of the same age تمايَسُshe sways gracefully إِذwhen مَشَتshe walked
دَبِيبَthe gentle tread of القَطَاthe sandgrouse أَوهُنَّor they مِنهُنَّthan them أَقطَفُshorter-stepped
She came among companions her own age, swaying as she walked,
She came between comrades, walking with the gait
With the tread of sandgrouse—or they took even shorter steps.
Of a delicate gazelle, softer than they.

They turn early to a polished mirror and a musk pod,
In the early morn she appears, face unveiled, shimmering,
Strongly fragrant, with a pestle and a scent-testing tool in their hands.
Bearing a mirror and kohl stick in hand.
أَشَارَتshe gestured إلَينَاto us فيwith حَيَاءٍshyness ورَاعَهَاand frightened her
سَراةَthe height of الضُّحَىthe forenoon مِنِّيon my part عَلَىat الحَيّthe clan’s encampment مَوقِفُstanding
She gestured to us shyly, and was alarmed
She gestured to me shyly as I stood there,
By my standing at the clan’s encampment in midmorning.
Dazzled by the radiance of dawn upon her beauty.
وقالتand she said تَبَاعَدkeep your distance يَاO ابنَson of عَمِّيmy paternal uncle فَإِنَّنِيfor indeed I

And she said, “Keep your distance, cousin, for I
And she said “Keep your distance, cousin, for I am promised
have been afflicted with a domineering man, jealous and harsh.”
To a jealous, violent man who would be angered."
