إنيindeed I لَعَمركَby your life مَاnot أخشَىI fear إِذَاwhen ذُكِرَتare mentioned
إني لَعَمركَ مَا أخشَى إِذَا ذُكِرَت
مِنِّيof mine الخَلاَئِقُcharacter traits فيin مُستَكرِهِthe harshness of الزَّمَنِtime
مِنِّي الخَلاَئِقُ في مُستَكرِهِ الزَّمَنِ
Indeed, by your life, I do not fear, when mention is made
of my traits amid the hardships of time,
أنthat لاَnot أكَوُنَI be إِذَاwhen مَاemphatic particle أزمَةٌa crisis أزَمَتgrew severe
أن لاَ أكَوُنَ إِذَا مَا أزمَةٌ أزَمَت
مُرَبَّباًpampered ذَاpossessing قَرِيضٍcud أملَسَsmooth البَدَنthe body
مُرَبَّباً ذَا قَرِيضٍ أملَسَ البَدَن
that, when a crisis grows severe, I may not be
pampered, with cud to chew, sleek of body.
وَلاَnor اُبَالِيI care إِذَاif لَمdid not أَجنI commit فَاحِشَةًa shameful deed
وَلاَ اُبَالِي إِذَا لَم أَجن فَاحِشَةً
طُولَlong duration of الشُّحُوبِgauntness وَلاَnor أرتَاحُI delight لِلسِّمَنِin fatness
طُولَ الشُّحُوبِ وَلاَ أرتَاحُ لِلسِّمَنِ
Nor do I mind, if I have committed no shameful deed,
prolonged gauntness; nor do I delight in fatness.
