He wept, and the mountains of Subh pitied him.
The morning mountains wept for him,
And Murut joined the mountains there in mourning.
And the mountains were made happy by it.
حِجَازِيُّof the Hijaz الهَوَىlove عَلِقٌbound بِنَجدٍto Najd
جَوِيٌّlovesick لاnot يَعِيشُhe lives ولاand not يَمُوتُhe dies
Hijazi in his love, bound to Najd,
A Hejazi, his love clinging to Najd,
Lovesick, he neither lives nor dies.
Neither able to live nor die.
فَتَردَعُهthen it drives him back الدَّبُورthe west wind لهاit has أَجِيجٌa roar
ويُسلِمهand it surrenders him إِلىto الوَجدِlonging المَبِيتُthe night's lodging
Then the west wind, roaring, drives him back,
The caravans deter him for their howling,
And his lodging at night gives him over to longing.
And the ardour of night surrenders him.
كأَنَّas though فؤادَهhis heart كَفَّاthe two hands of غَرِيقٍa drowning man

As though his heart were a drowning man's two hands,
As if his heart were the palm of a drowning man,
Whom a great fish grappled with at the sea's edge.
Struggled over by a whale at sea's edge.

For Hind, your eye pours tears by the bucket,
You have an eye, Hind, with kohl adorned,
And a heart that will be lost or slip away,
And a heart soon to be lost or wasted.
إِذاwhen اكتَنَفاthe two beset بِضَرِّهِماwith their harm سَقِيماًa sick man
يُعادِىhe battles الدّاءthe illness ليسthere is not لَهُfor him مُقِيتُa sustainer
When the two beset a sick man with their harm,
When they two afflict a sick man with their harm,
Who battles illness with no one to sustain him.
The disease they aid has no assuager.
