جَميلُكَyour kindness لاnot يَجزيهِrepay it شُكريmy gratitude وَلاnor حَمديmy praise
وَرِفدُكَand your bounty أَغنىenriched قَبلَbefore رِفدِthe bounty of ذَويpossessors of الرِفدِbounty
Your kindness cannot be repaid by my gratitude or my praise.
Your beauty my gratitude and praise cannot suffice,
And your bounty enriched me before the bounty of other givers.
And your generosity enriched me before the generous could endow.
وَتُسديand you bestow إِلَيَّto me الفَضلَfavor مِنfrom كُلِّevery وجهَةٍquarter
وَجاهُكَand your influence بَينَbetween الخافِقَينِthe eastern and western horizons هُوَit is المُسديthe bestower
And you bestow favor on me from every quarter,
You bestowed favor upon me from every side,
and your influence, from east to west, is what bestows it.
And your renown between the horizons has granted favor.
كَرُمتَyou were noble فَأَكسَبتَso you endowed العَبيدَthe slaves كَرامَةًdignity
فَمِنfor from شَرَفِthe honor of المَولىthe master أَتىcame شَرَفُthe honor of العَبدِthe slave
You were noble, and so endowed slaves with dignity;
You were generous so you brought honor to your servants,
for the slave's honor came from the master's honor.
Thus the master’s nobility brought the slave nobility.
وَلَولاكَand were it not for you لَمwould not يُعرَفbe known مَكانيmy standing وَلَمnor would يَطُلgrow long
لِسانيmy tongue وَلَمَnor would تُخصِبgrow fertile يَفاعيmy uplands وَلاnor وُهديmy lowlands
And but for you, my standing would not be known, nor would
If not for you none would know my place, nor speak my tongue,
my tongue have gained reach, nor my uplands or lowlands grown fertile.
Nor would my palms bear fruit, nor be guided.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was مَقبوضَrestrained اليَدَينِboth hands عَنِfrom الغِنىwealth
فَطَوَّلتَso you lengthened باعيmy reach بِالجَميلِthrough the kindness الَّذيthat تُسديyou bestow
And both my hands had been held back from wealth;
I was destitute, bereft of wealth,
so you lengthened my reach with the kindness you bestow.
But you lengthened my arms with the good you bestowed.
وَكَثَّرتand you multiplied حُسّاديmy enviers وَثَمَّرتَand you made fruitful نِعمَتيmy prosperity
وَذَلَّلتِand you subdued لِيfor me دَهرِيmy life's fortunes وَأَوضَحتَand you clarified ليfor me رُشديmy right course
And you multiplied my enviers and made my prosperity bear fruit;
You increased my enviers but made my blessings thrive,
and you subdued my life's fortunes for me and made my right path clear.
You made my fate submissive and clarified my guidance.
وَأَغنَيتَنيand you enriched me حَتّىso much that كَأَنَّكَas though you ضامِنٌa guarantor
لِنَسليَfor my descendants أَلّاthat ... not يَعدَمُواthey lack ثَروَةًwealth بَعديafter me
And you enriched me so much that you seem to guarantee
You enriched me as if you'd guaranteed
that my descendants will not lack wealth after me.
My descendants will never lack wealth after me.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI was فيin ضَنكٍhardship مِنَof العَيشِlivelihood بُرهَةًfor a while
فَأَصبَحتُso I came to be مِنthrough نُعماكَyour bounty فيin عِيشَةٍa life رَغدٍease
And for a time I had lived in hardship;
For a time I lived in deprivation and hardship -
then, through your bounty, I came to a life of ease.
But through your blessings I now live in ease and comfort.
وَرىstruck fire بِكَthrough you زنديmy firestick بَعدَماafter كانَit had been مُصلِداًyielding no fire
وَأَورَقَand leafed out غُصنيmy branch بَعدَماafter كادَnearly أَنto يُكديyield nothing
My firestick sparked through you after it had yielded no fire;
Through you my withered soul revived after it was despondent,
and my branch put forth leaves after it had almost gone barren.
And my branch flourished after it nearly dried up.
وَقَدand indeed مَلَأَhas filled الآفاقَthe horizons حَمديmy praise وَكُلَّماand whenever
حَمَدتُكَI praised you زادَتexceeded مكرُماتُكَyour generous deeds عَنbeyond حَمديmy praise
And my praise has filled the horizons, and whenever
I've filled the horizons with my praise, and whenever
I praise you, your generous deeds surpass my praise.
I praise you, your favors upon me only increase beyond my praise.
سَأُجهِدُI shall exert نَفسيmyself فيin الثَناءِpraise وَلَيتَنيand if only I
جَزَيتُI repaid يَسيراًa little مِنof جَميلِكِyour kindness فيthrough جُهديmy effort
I shall exert myself in praise; would that I
I will exert myself in praise, and would that I
could repay a little of your kindness through my striving.
Could minimally reciprocate your kindness in my striving.
أَباO father of صالِحٍSalih أَصبَحتَyou have become فَرداًpeerless وَأَصبَحَتand have become
مَعاليكَyour lofty virtues أَفراداًpeerless مِنَfrom الصَمَدِthe Self-Sufficient الفردِthe Unique One
Abu Salih, you have become peerless, and
Abu Salih, you've become singular, and your
your lofty virtues peerless, from the Self-Sufficient, the Unique One.
Sublimities have become the unique, Eternal, Indivisible.
ضَميرُكَyour conscience لِلتَقوىfor piety وَسَعيُكَand your striving لِلعُلىfor lofty honor
وَمالُكَand your wealth لِلنُعمىfor beneficence وَعُمرُكَand your lifetime لِلمَجدِfor glory
Your conscience is devoted to piety, and your striving to the heights;
Your conscience is for piety and your effort for the sublime,
and your wealth is for beneficence, and your lifetime for glory.
Your wealth for bounty and your life for glory.

When you press army against army, bent aside are
When you push back armies with armies,
the enemies' backs, away from the shafts of supple spears.
The enemy ranks recoil from the steadfast ranks.

Battle has complained of you for kindling its blaze,
Misfortune complains of the flames your efforts ignite
and for entwining lean, sleek steeds with unsheathed swords,
And the wrapping of shrouds around the bare bodies.
وَمِمّاand because of how تَسُدُّyou fill الجَوَّthe air فيin كُلِّevery مَعرَكٍbattlefield

and for filling the air on every battlefield,
And of how you block the air in every battle
and laying the foe low while lean horses gallop.
And defeat the enemies while the horses charge wildly.
حَوَيتَyou attained العُلىthe heights مُذsince كُنتَyou were طِفلاًa child وَمُهِّدَتand was made smooth

You attained the heights from childhood, and made smooth was
You encompassed the heights since you were a child,
the earth through you, since your garments were wrapped in the cradle.
And for you the earth was smoothed since your swaddling clothes.
فِداكَyour ransom جَميعُall العالَمينَthe world's peoples مِنَfrom الرَدىdeath
فَإِنَّfor indeed الَّذيthe one who يُفدىis ransomed نَظيرُthe equal of الَّذيthe one who يَفديransoms
May all the world's peoples be your ransom from death;
All the worlds sacrifice themselves to protect you from harm,
for he who is ransomed is the peer of him who ransoms.
For he who is ransomed is equal to he who ransoms.
وَقَفتُI stood فَأَبدَيتُthen I revealed الثَناءَpraise وَإِنَّنيand indeed I
أُسِرُّI conceal مِنَof الإِخلاصِsincere devotion أَضعافَmany times ماwhat أُبديI reveal
I stood and proclaimed my praise, and indeed I
I stood and openly declared praise, and truly
conceal many times the sincere devotion that I reveal.
My sincerity is manifold what I have declared.
فَلاso no حُبَّlove إِلّاexcept دُونَbelow حُبِّيmy love وَصُحبَتيand my companionship
وَلاand no وُدَّaffection إِلّاexcept دُونَbelow ماwhat صَحَّproved true مِنof وُدِّيmy affection
So every other love falls short of my love and companionship;
There is no love but after my love and companionship,
and all other affection falls short of my proven affection.
No affection but after what proved true of my affection.
حَياتُكَyour life أَشهىmore desirable فيin فُؤاديmy heart مِنَthan التُقىpiety
وَشُكرُكَand thanking you أَحلىsweeter فيon لِسانيmy tongue مِنَthan الشَهدِhoney
Your life is dearer to my heart than piety;
Your life is dearer in my heart than piety itself,
and thanking you is sweeter on my tongue than honey.
And your gratitude sweeter on my tongue than honey.
فَعِشso live لاmay not خَلاbe empty مِنكَof you الزَمانُtime وَلاnor خَلَتbe empty

So live; may time never be without you, nor may
So live an eternal life devoid of your absence,
your palaces lack abiding glory and good fortune.
And may your palaces never lack settled glory and bliss!
