Your dwellings at al-Ajr: a spring and ruined traces.

May pouring, torrential showers water them.

Where acacia and wild lote trees spend the night beside you,

near at hand—my life for that acacia and those lote trees!

Dwellings of herds of pale camels: no long span

was granted them, or the camels dwelling in them.

    فَهُنَّ وَأَيّامُ الشَبيبَةِ أَسمالُ

    They have grown threadbare since I left, as youth has;

they and the days of youth are rags.

There is no recovery for you, and no recovery for me.

about the tribe? I keep asking you about them.

for in gentleness you show kindness and grace.

are a necklace for your throat, and the crescents are anklets.

see you; but the omen of seeing you proved false.

vast deserts where dealings demand exertion.

my heart flutters whenever the mirage flickers.

that shackles my mounts; favors are fetters.

his bounty has become my distraction from them.

and money is the least of his gifts.

that, in army-to-army combat, it shatters hosts.

the drawn blade and its drawer resemble each other there.

he gives life to whoever hopes in him, while the Indian-steel blade kills.

    horses prancing in crimson gold.

showing and proclaiming that this is high honor.

were camels to the eye, atop the 'dooms of burdens.'

whose hems are trailed above the Milky Way.

a robe of the sun's light came to you.

Time has shouldered for you whatever burdens you bear.

for a thicket is mighty when a lion like you is within it.

    Mirdasid heroes with lofty noses.

rains, lions—and slender spears are their thickets.

with their right hands, drought will not blight that land.
