You placed your trust in God most nobly,

So you achieved against your enemies what you hoped for.

You are great, so win greatness; for

The great attain only great things.

And spring against your enemies like a lion

That accepts only kingdoms as its lair.

    وَلَقَد صَبَرتَ وَما صَبَرتَ ذَليلا

    You have indeed held back, but not from fear;

And you have been patient, but never abased.

And you were content with a meager portion, yet were not

A lesser man for being content with little.

O you who earned abundant gratitude because

You gave much and won much back.

Go wherever you wish, for your good fortune has left

No pulpit in Syria locked against you.

And leave al-Khatt's spears, along their joints,

Full of clotted blood, and keen blades full of notches.

And give the mature steeds, from Qaʿḍab's spearheads,

Forehead-blazes, and from wading through blood, stockings.

Until you return, having exhausted in pursuit of glory

A noble man's utmost effort, and quenched a burning thirst.

God is your protector if you remain in residence,

And guarantor of your glory if you choose to depart.

You have indeed surpassed kings with a resolve

That left the man proud of his excellence outdone.

And you spent your wealth to shield an honor never left

Threatened by reproach or exposed to it.

And you bore time's burdens, and have never ceased

Among us to bear time's burdens steadfastly.

How often a wrongdoer wronged you, yet you were not

Hasty to show restraint once you had the power.

And many a band crossed the wilderness to you,

Breadth and length, upon full-grown riding camels.

They were safe from straying at sight of you; enough for them

Was the light of your face as guide and pathfinder.

They reached the master of noble deeds after

Reaching Muʿizz al-Dawla, whom they had hoped for.

A king crowned with praise, who desired no

Crown to adorn him, nor any diadem.

    وَلَقَد سَأَلتُ فَما سَأَلتُ بَخيلا

    I have indeed kept company, but not with a blameworthy man;

And I have indeed petitioned, but not a miser.

Sweet of nature and of giving—we have never ceased

To draw gift upon gift from his largesse.

O master of princes, hear a grateful man's prayer

For your gracious deeds, morning and evening.

Good fortune came with your arrival, and your subjects gained

From you what they desired and hoped for.

They greet you as you approach, wishing

To walk a mile toward you upon their eyes.

Knowing that you have spread over them

A sheltering shade of excellent judgment.

And the palace longs to come forth in greeting,

If only it could find a way to walk.

You made it beautiful when you arrived; it had not been

Beautiful in people's eyes since you had left it.

May the world never lack your continued presence; for

Happiness lasts only if you live long.
