لِمَنwhose دِمنَةٌcampsite traces مِثلُlike خَطِّthe script of الزَبورِthe Psalms
عَفَتهاeffaced it الدَبورُthe west wind وَرِيحُand the wind الصَباthe east wind
Whose are these campsite traces, like the script of the Psalms,
For whom is there a constitution like the line of bees,
effaced by the west wind and the east wind,
Whose chastity the decrepit and the zephyr wasted away,
وَكُلُّand every مُلِثٍّunrelenting rain-cloud مِنَamong المُعصِراتِthe rain-laden clouds
لَهُit has هَيدَبٌa trailing rain-fringe مِثلُlike هُدبِthe fringe of الرِداa cloak
and every unrelenting rain-laden cloud,
And every sweet-smelling fruit juice,
with a fringe of rain like the fringe of a cloak?
Has a cadaver like the cadaver of the burial shrouds?
تَرىyou see البرقَthe lightning يَضحَكُlaughing فيin جَوِّهِits sky
وَحَتّىand at last تَراهُyou see it كَثيرَcopious in البُكاweeping
You see lightning laughing in its sky,
You see the lightning laugh in its atmosphere,
and at last you see it weeping profusely.
And until you see it crying abundantly,
يَحُطُّbrings down مِنَfrom النِيقِthe mountain peak ماwhatever فيin الوُكُورِthe nests
وَيُخفيand conceals مِنَof الأَرضِthe earth ماwhatever فيin الكُوىthe hollows
It brings down from the mountain peak whatever is in the nests,
It descends from the camels what is in the sheep-folds,
and conceals whatever lies in the hollows of the earth.
And conceals from the land what is in the dens,
وَتُضحيand become المَكاكيُّthe larks مِنfrom وَبلِهِits downpour
كَوامِنَhiding فيin جَنَباتِthe sides of الصُوىthe cairns
And from its downpour the larks become
So the planets became brilliant because of its dampness,
hidden along the sides of the cairns.
Like the hiding places in the folds of the valleys,
خَلَتbecame empty مِنof مَهاthe oryxes of الإِنسhumankind تِلكَthose الرُسومُcampsite traces
وَأَضحَتand became مُعَوَّضَةًgiven replacements بالمَهاwith oryxes
Those traces are empty of the oryxes of humankind,
The landmarks were devoid of their beauty, oh people,
and have received wild oryxes in their stead.
And they became compensated with magnificence,
وَعَهديand my recollection بِهاof it وَهِيَwhile it was مَأوىthe abode of الحِسانِbeautiful women
فَقَدso now أَصبَحَتit has become وَهيَwhile it is مَأوىthe abode of الجَواheartache
And I remember it as the abode of beautiful women;
My covenant with it while it was the asylum of well-being,
yet now it has become the abode of heartache.
So it became while it was the asylum of the hollows,
سَأَلناwe asked رُباهاits hills عَنِabout الظاعِنينَthose departing
فَكانَso was الجَوابُthe answer جَوابَthe reply of الصَداthe echo
We asked its hills about those who had departed,
We asked its Lord about the wailers,
and the answer was the echo's answer.
So the answer was the answer of the reverberations,
وَمَرتٍand a barren waste خَبَطناهُwe traversed it بِالناجِياتِon swift she-camels
وَقَدwhile already كَمَنlay hidden الصُبحُthe dawn تَحتَbeneath الدُجىthe darkness
And we crossed a barren waste on swift she-camels,
And once we were groping in the bright nights,
while dawn lay hidden beneath the darkness.
While the dawn was hiding underneath the darkness,
سَقَيتُI gave to drink بِهِthere الرَكبَthe caravan كَأسَa cup of النُعاسِdrowsiness
وَغَنّاهُمُand sang to them الذِئبُthe wolf لَماwhen عَوىit howled
There I gave the caravan a cup of drowsiness to drink,
I gave the caravan a cup of drowsiness to drink,
and the wolf sang to them when it howled.
And the wolf sang to them when it howled,
أَقولُI say لَهُمto them وَرُؤُوسُwhile the heads of المَطيِّthe riding camels
كَأَنَّas though عَلَيهاon them بُصاقَthe spittle of الدَبىyoung locusts
I say to them, while the heads of the riding camels
I say to them and the heads of the camels
seem covered with the spittle of young locusts,
Were as if the spittle of insects were on them,
وَنَحنُand we وَهُنَّand they كَحُدبِlike the curves of القِسِيِّbows
مِنfrom طُولِthe duration of ماhow جَنَفَتناbent us sideways السُرىnight journeys
and we and they are like the curves of bows,
While we and they were like the hump of tattered garment
from the long night journeys that have bent us sideways:
From the length of tribulation which maimed us,
أَريحُواrest قَليلاًa little فَدُونfor before المُعِزّal-Mu'izz
تَنائِفُtrackless wastes يُرهَبُis feared فيهاin them التَوىperishing
"Rest a little, for before al-Mu'izz
Rest a little, for beneath the shelters,
lie trackless wastes where death is feared."
There are successive rests, in which languor is awed,
فلَمّاthen when نَزَلناwe camped بِبَعضِin one of الهُجولِthe hollows
شَكَوناwe complained إلىto البرِّthe wilderness طُولَthe length of القَوىhunger
Then, when we camped in one of the hollows,
So when we descended to one of the barren lands,
we complained to the wilderness of our long hunger.
We complained to the wilderness about the length of the journey,
وَقُمناand we rose نَدِبُّcreeping دَبيبَthe creeping of الصِلالِserpents
بَينَbetween القُلالthe hilltops وَبَينand between الجُوىthe hollows
We rose and crept like serpents,
And we stood lamenting the creep of twilight,
between the hilltops and the hollows.
Between the hills and between the valleys,
فلاحَتthen appeared لَناto us عِندَat وَجهthe beginning of الصَباحِthe morning
حِقباءُa white-bellied wild she-ass مِنfrom تَحتbeneath عَبلِthick of الشَوىlimb
At daybreak there appeared to us
And there appeared to us at the face of the morning,
a white-bellied wild she-ass beneath a stout-limbed beast,
Encampments from below the thickets of heat,
مُكِبٌّstooping عَلَيهاover her بِمَلمُومَةٍwith a compact, rounded head
لَهاit has شُعلَتانtwo flames كجَمرlike the embers of الغَضاghada wood
stooping over her with a compact, rounded head,
Inclining on it with blameworthy,
bearing two flames like embers of ghada wood,
Having two flames like embers of coal,
وَفيهاand in it نَواجِمُjutting fangs بيضُwhite المُتونِthe backs
مُذَرّبةsharpened مِثلُlike رُوسِthe tips of المُدىknives
and in it jut fangs, white on their backs,
In it pure-white bellies of vessels,
sharpened like the tips of knives.
Flowing like heads of outstretched necks,
لَهُhe has لِبَدٌmane-tufts كَجَناحِlike the wing of الظَليمa male ostrich
بِيضُwhite الأَسافِلِthe bases حُمرُred الذُرىthe crests
He has mane-tufts like the wing of a male ostrich,
It has a garment like the wing of a dark bird,
white at their bases and red at their crests.
White at the lower parts, red at the higher parts,
فَلَمّاthen when رَآناhe saw us رَأَىhe saw مِثلَهُhis own like
خِماصَhollow البُطونِbellies لِفَرطfrom excessive الطَوىhunger
When he saw us, he saw his own like:
So when it saw us, it saw the likes of it,
hollow-bellied from excessive hunger.
Weak bellies because of the abundance of journeying,
فَزَمجَرthen he growled حَتّىuntil رَأَيتَyou saw الوِهادَthe lowlands
يُزَلزِلُهاshakes them صَوتُهhis voice وَالرُبىand the hills
He growled until you saw the lowlands
So it roared until you saw the valleys
and the hills shaken by his voice.
Quaking with its voice and the ruins,
وَأَقبَلَand he advanced يَمشيwalking إِلىtoward فِتيةٍyoung men
يُريعُونthey frighten مِنهُof his kind وَمِنهاand of her kind العِدىthe enemies
He came walking toward young men
And it walked toward youths,
who terrified foes of his kind and hers.
Who were frightened of it and of the return,
فَشَدّواso they charged عَلىat كَهمَسٍa lion شَدَّةًa fierce charge
فَبَعضٌso some وَجاهُstabbed him وَبَعضٌand some رَمىshot
They charged the lion fiercely;
So they moved toward an old she-camel decisively,
some stabbed him, and some shot.
Whereupon one confronted it while the other shot arrows,
واُبناand we returned بِزادَينwith two provisions نَحوَtoward الرِكابِthe riding camels
عَيرِthe wild ass of الفَلاةِthe desert وَلَيثِand the lion of الشَرىal-Shara
We returned toward the mounts with two provisions:
We hurried with the supplies toward the caravan -
the desert's wild ass and the lion of al-Shara.
Beast of the desert and lion of evildoing -
وَظَلناand we kept نُلَهوِجُroasting hastily ذاكَthat القَنيصَquarry
وَنَأكُلُand eating مِنout of عَجَلٍhaste ماwhatever اِنشَوىwas roasted
We kept hastily roasting that quarry,
And we remained biting that shirt of mail
and in our haste ate whatever was roasted.
And eating from a slaughtered calf what was roasted,
فَلَمّاthen when اِكتَفَيناwe had our fill قرَيناwe entertained الوُحُوشَthe wild beasts
مِنfrom مِثلِهاtheir own kind فَضَلاتِthe leftovers of الشَوىroast meat
When we had eaten our fill, we hosted the wild beasts
So when we were satiated, we fed the beasts
on leftover roast meat from their own kind.
Remnants similar to the remnants of roasting,
وَرُحناand we set out نَخوضُwading بِهاwith them فيthrough السَرابِthe mirage
طِوالَlong الرِقابِnecks طِوالَlong الخُطاstrides
We set out, wading with them through the mirage,
And we set out wading with it in the mirage,
long of neck and long of stride,
Long of necks, long of slaughters,
إِلىtoward مَلِكٍa king جازَsurpassed قَدرَthe rank of المُلوكِkings
فَكانَso he was الثُرياthe Pleiades وَكانواand they were الثَرىthe dust
toward a king who surpassed the rank of kings:
To a king who surpassed the position of kings,
he was the Pleiades, and they were dust.
So he was wealth and they were earth,
بَنىhe built وَبَنواand they built دَرَجَthe steps of المَكرُماتِnoble deeds
فَطالَso towered عَلىabove ماwhat بَنَواthey built ماwhat بَنىhe built
He built, and they built, the steps of noble deeds,
He built and they built the steps of favors,
but what he built towered above what they built.
So what he built lasted longer than what they built,
فَلمّاthen when وَصَلناwe reached أَباAbu (father of) صالِحٍSalih
وَصَلناwe reached أَجَلّthe most exalted مُلُوكِkings of الوَرىhumankind
When we reached Abu Salih,
So when we arrived at Abu Salih,
we reached the most exalted of the kings of humankind.
We arrived at the greatest of earth’s kings,
فَتىًa young man سَبَقَoutstripped الناسَpeople بِالمَكرُماتِin noble deeds
إِلىto أَمَدٍa goal لَمdid not يَحُزهُattain it مَدىany reach
A young man who outstripped people in noble deeds,
A young man who surpassed people in favors,
to a goal no reach has ever attained.
To an extent no range has included,
كَريمُnoble النَجابَةِlineage عَفُّchaste الإِزارِthe waistcloth
بَصيرٌdiscerning بِغَيرِin other than طَريقِthe path of الخَناindecency
Noble in lineage, chaste beneath his waistcloth,
Noble in chastity, chaste in loincloth,
discerning in ways other than the way of vice.
Insightful without the path of error,
يَليقُbefits بِهِhim المَجدُglory وَالمَكرُماتُand noble deeds
وَتَصدُقand prove true ألقابُهُhis titles وَالكَنىand honorific names
Glory and noble deeds befit him,
Glory and favors befit him,
and his titles and honorific names ring true.
And his nicknames and titles prove truthful,
فَماso whatever يَفعَلُdo الناسُpeople مِنof صالِحٍgood
فَإِنَّthen indeed المُعِزَّal-Mu'izz بِذاكَwith that اِبتَداbegan
Whatever good people do,
So whatever good people do,
al-Mu'izz was the first to do it.
Al-Muizz was first in initiating that,
يَوَدّhe wishes وَحاشاهand far be it from him لَوthat قُدِّمَتwere served
إِلىto الضَيفِthe guest مُهجَتُهhis lifeblood فيin القِرىhospitality
He wishes—far be it from him—that there be served
He wishes - far be it from him - that
to the guest, as hospitality, his own lifeblood.
His guest’s present be brought forward in homes,
وَكَمand how often عُدِمَwas lacking الخِصبُabundance فيin بَلدَةٍa town
فَقامَso stood نَداهُhis bounty مَقامَin the place of الحَياrain
How often abundance was lacking in a town,
And how often fertility was absent in a country,
and his bounty took the place of rain.
So he took its place in the manner of life,
شَرىhe bought الزادَprovisions بِالماِلِwith money مِنfrom جالبِيهِits suppliers
وَباتُواand they spent the night فَأَطعَمَهُمso he fed them ماwhat شَرىhe bought
He bought provisions with money from their suppliers,
He bought supplies with money from its importers,
and they stayed the night, so he fed them what he had bought.
And they spent the night so he fed them what he bought.
فَسَلso ask عَنهُabout him كَمhow much فَرَّقَتdistributed كَفُّهُhis hand
مِنَof المالِwealth فيin جَمعِputting together هَذاthis البِناedifice
Ask about him: how much his hand has distributed
So ask how much his palm dispersed
of wealth in putting this edifice together.
Of money in the collection of this structure,
إِذاif شِئتَyou wish تُحصيto count جَميلَthe kindness of المُعِزِّal-Mu'izz
فَعُدَّthen count النُجومَthe stars وَعُدَّand count الحَصاthe pebbles
If you wish to count al-Mu'izz's kindnesses,
If you want to count Al-Muizz’s good deeds,
count the stars and count the pebbles.
Then count the stars and count the pebbles,
فَإِنand if تُحصِهاyou count them تَلقَyou will find مَعروقَهُhis bounty (uncertain reading)
يَزيدُexceeds المِثالُthe comparison عَلىbeyond ذِيthis وَذاand that
If you count them, you will find his bounty [uncertain reading]
And if you count them you will meet his authenticated
exceeding, in comparison, both this and that.
Increase over that with examples,
بَدانيhe began with me بِنُعماهُwith his favors قَبلَbefore المُلوكthe kings
وَماand not الفَضلُthe merit إِلّاexcept لِمَنto whoever قَدalready بَداbegan
He first bestowed his favors on me, before the kings,
He graced me with his bounties before kings,
and merit belongs only to the one who began.
And favor is only for he who has initiated,
زَكانيmade me flourish مَعروفُهُhis beneficence وَالجَميلُand kindness
إِذاwhen كانَit is عِندَwith زَكِيٍّa worthy person زَكاit flourishes
His beneficence made me flourish; and kindness,
His good graced me and the fine thing is that
when placed with a worthy person, flourishes.
When it is with a gracious one, it is graced,
أَباO Abu صالِحٍSalih إِنif أَغِبI am absent عَنfrom عُلاكَyour eminence
فَقَلبُكَthen your heart ليfor me شاهِدٌa witness بِالوَلاto loyalty
Abu Salih, if I am absent from your lofty presence,
Oh Abu Salih, if I am absent from your exaltation,
your heart bears witness to my loyalty.
Then your heart is witness to my devotion,
وَإِنَّand indeed حَياتيmy life إِذاwhen لاnot أَراكَI see you

And my life, when I do not see you,
And that my life when I do not see you
is a life I deem equal to my death.
Is life, and my death - I see it as equal,
جَميلُكَyour kindness وَسَّعَbroadened ليfor me فيin المَعاشِlivelihood
وَرَغَّبَنيand made me desire فيin ابتِناءِbuilding القُرىvillages
Your kindness has broadened my livelihood
Your beauty expanded for me the means of life,
and made me desire to build villages.
And made me hope for the building of homes,
وَأَنتَand you بِفَضلِكَthrough your bounty صَيَّرتَنيhave made me
أَغيبُI go away فَأجمَعُand so gather مِنهاfrom them اللُهىriches
And you, through your bounty, have made me one
And you, with your grace, made me
who goes away and gathers wealth from them.
Go away so I gather from it enjoyments,
I sought it

Whatever land I seek,
And which land have I set my course for
wealth from you seeks me there.
Except that your riches have sufficed me in it?
فَليso I have مِنfrom نَداكَyour bounty رَبيعٌa springtime هُناكَthere
وَليand I have مِنfrom نَداكَyour bounty رَبيعٌa springtime هُناhere
From your bounty I have a springtime there,
So I have from your help a springtime there,
and from your bounty I have a springtime here.
And I have from your help a springtime here,
جُزيتَmay you be rewarded عَنِon behalf of المَدحِpraise وَالمادِحينَand those who praise

May you be rewarded on behalf of praise and its poets,
You were rewarded for praise and those who praise
and on behalf of your world's people, with the finest reward.
And the people of your world - the best reward,
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you أَنتَyou yourself حَرَستَhave guarded الثُغورَthe frontiers
وَذُدتَand repelled بِسَيفِكَwith your sword عَنهاfrom them العِدىthe enemies
For you yourself have guarded the frontiers,
For you defended the frontiers
and driven their enemies away with your sword.
And warded off enmity from them with your sword,
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you عَلّمتَhave taught أَهلَthe people of السَماحِgenerosity
كَيفَhow السَماحُgenerosity وَكَيفَand how السَخاmunificence
And you have taught the generous
And you taught the people of generosity
how to give freely and how to be munificent.
How is generosity and how is giving,

Rejoice in your festival, and may it be joyous
May your Eid be congratulated and congratulated
for these people—this happiness.
To the people of this wilderness - this congratulation,

an ally of good fortune, an ally of lasting life.
Friend of good fortune, friend of remaining,
