To your sword, after God, praise is due.

Would that my eyelid were its sheath as long as I live!

    وَيا رُبَّ حَدٍّ في التَقاضي بِهِ حَدُّ

    You exacted a debt from your foes with its edge;

and oh, many an edge has a limit when debts are exacted with it.

And you have never ceased to plunge into every ordeal

before which even the tawny lion fears death,

until you gathered glory from every harvest-ground

hard to reach for anyone whom fortune does not aid.

So those who strive cannot attain what you attain,

for India has not sharpened the edge of every sword.

Nor is everyone whose soul yearns for glory

steadfast through the trials by which glory is won.

You mastered the path of earnest striving, until through it rose

your fortune; indeed, through diligence fortune rises.

And you wearied a precious soul in pursuit of high honors,

so when you ate bitter aloe, honey tasted sweet to you.

With the sword's edge you restored what, had you restored it

to us without the sword, would not have been well restored.

And I have seen no person stronger than you

against the calamities of the days, when disaster grows fierce.

But for your overflowing hand, you would seem a rocky hill

when hardship descends, or a solid stone.

With this conquest you closed a gate of harm:

outwardly it is an opening, inwardly a closing.

And what goal have you sought that has not been achieved

for you by keen white blades and slender, supple spears,

and faithful young men, who bear along with their spears

hearts so weighty that sleek steeds complain of bearing them?

When a child of theirs leaves the cradle, then

God's earth becomes, in its safety, a cradle for him.

Of the Salihiyyun, who have rebelled

against disaster since they were mature men while still beardless youths.

Rainclouds when they give, lions when they charge,

a multitude against their foes, a handful when counted.

    إِذا خَرَجَت مِن صَدرِهِ خَرَجَ الحقدُ

    They thrust spearheads into the enemy's back;

when they emerge from his chest, his rancor departs.

Kindlers of war, yet in their generosity

seas: when they stretch out their hands, they swell in flood.

Faithful when they grant protection, bold when they strike,

wise when they speak, faithful when they love.

When a lord among them dies, he has no

grave in the dust, nor burial niche, so great is his glory.

O traveler setting out at dawn, carry to them

the greeting of a free man who passed the night as their slave.

    فَطالَ بِكُم طالَت حَياتُكُمُ الوَفدُ

    And tell them: stand tall, for your renown is sweet;

through you delegations stand tall—may your lives be long!

And for you, from east to west, there wafts

a fragrance of renown such as no incense can exhale.

You fulfilled what no one has ever fulfilled the like of,

though no pledge bound you in it, nor any covenant.

But you sought the Imam and his favor,

so renunciation brought you success in what you won.

    أَلا إِنَّما فِعلُ الجَميلِ هُوَ الرُشدُ

    And doing good guided you to right guidance;

indeed, doing good is nothing but right conduct.

    وَأَيُّ سَديدٍ ما دَرى أَنَّكُم سَدُّ

    And you became a barrier for that frontier against the foes;

what sound-minded man does not know you are a barrier?

No one but you repelled the Romans' stratagem,

giving when no defense against them remained.

    إِذا أَسرَعَت في الخَطوِ أَثقَلَها السَردُ

    They came weighing down the earth, mounted on lean steeds;

when they quickened their pace, chain mail weighed them down.

The iron weave upon them concealed them,

so that not one among them had a limb exposed.

But for you, they would not have been kept from our sanctuary

or Islam's sanctity by any army or gathered host.

But you kissed them with slender spears

from al-Khatt, whose wielders were fierce adversaries.

And you plunged into a dust-cloud whose grit turned the air ashen,

yet through it sore eyes came alive.

That dust did not clear until you had cast them down

as prey on which the wild beasts would later feed.

    And skulls became water-troughs,

split open, so food and water were brought together.

Let no hopes covet what you possess,

for lions do not abandon their prey.

    Virtues like stars, piercingly bright,

are yours; no calculation or count can number them.

He stands alone in generosity, beyond Hatim

and Kaʿb—Muʿizz al-Dawla, the peerless king.

He did good until he left no benefactor's name

save a name the caravan chants or sings.

I strung for him a splendid necklace of praise,

and said: this necklace befits that neck.

Abu Salih, if it has been long since I served you,

it has not been long since I thanked you in an assembly.

And though I have not managed to repay you,

I pass my nights with what you bestowed on me, striving my utmost.

And I have seen no garment for a wearer like praise,

and the most lasting garment you wear is praise.
