وَجادَتكَand may they rain generously upon you أَنواؤُهُits rain-bearing stars الهُطَّلُpouring abundantly
May you be watered with rain, O dwelling,
O dwelling, life has watered you,
And may its rain-bearing stars pour generously upon you.
And its clouds have generously rained upon you.
وَإِنand although أَنتَyou لَمdid not تُبقِleave بَينَbetween المَلامِreproach

Though you have not left, between reproach
If you do not leave a rational man
And passion, a youth who keeps his reason.
Between blame and love,
تَمَنَّعتَyou held back بُخلاًout of stinginess بِرَدِّin returning الجَوابِthe reply
وَماand not زالَceased يَأويكَdwells in you مَنone who يَبخَلُis stingy
You held back, grudging a reply,
You stingily withheld answering,
And one who is stingy still dwells in you:
And he who is stingy continues to seek you out.

A tender beauty with shapely, full calves,
The ankles’ bangles are frightening,
Enfolded in long, loose-flowing hair.
Adorned by an arriving visitor.
تَقُولُshe says ذَهَلتَyou were dazed غَداةَon the morning of الفِراقِparting
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her كَيفَhow لاnot أَذهَلُI am dazed
She says, "You were dazed on the morning of parting."
You say you were shocked the morning of parting,
I said to her, "How could I not be dazed?"
So I said to her, “How could I not be shocked?”
وَلِيand I have بَعدَكُمafter you مَدمَعٌa tearful eye سائِلٌstreaming

And after your departure, my eye streams with tears,
After you, my tears flow
And my body wastes away, as you wished.
And my body dissolves as you wished.
وَقَدand already عَذَلُوناthey reproached us عَلىfor حُبِّكُمloving you
فَماbut not قَبلَaccepted العَذلَthe reproach مَنthe one who يُعذَلُis reproached
And they have reproached us for loving you,
They blamed us for loving you,
Yet the one reproached has not heeded the reproach.
But one who is blamed does not accept blame.
وَماand not مِنfrom ضَلالٍerror جَهلِناour ignorance of الصَوابَwhat is right

وَلَكِنbut نَلِجُّwe persist obstinately فَلاso not نَقبَلُwe accept
Our ignorance of what is right is not born of error,
We are not lost in ignorance of what’s right,
But we persist and will not accept it.
But we insist and do not accept.
كَمالَجَّjust as he persisted فيin المَكرُماتِnoble deeds الأَمِيرُthe emir
فَأَقصَرَso they desisted عَنfrom عَذلِهِreproaching him العُذَّلُthe reproachers
Just as the emir persisted in noble deeds,
The prince was unfair in his favors,
So his reproachers ceased reproaching him.
So those who were treated unfairly fell short of blaming him.
لَهُhis is فيin أَخيرِthe last of النَدىbounty آخِرٌa last one
وَفِيand in أَوَّلِيِّthe first of النَدىbounty أَوَّلُa first one
His is the last gift at bounty's end,
He has the last of the dew,
And the first at bounty's beginning.
And the first of the dew.
إِذاwhen أَمحَلَتsuffers drought بَلدَةٌa town حَلَّهاhe settles in it

فَيَحياso it revives بِهِthrough him البَلَدُthe land المُمحِلُdrought-stricken
When a town suffers drought, he settles there,
When a town is conquered by him,
So through him the drought-stricken land revives.
The conquered town comes alive through him.
أَخُوa man of ثِقَةٍtrustworthiness جارُهُhis neighbor لاnot يُضامُis wronged

وَداعِيهِand one who calls him لِلنَصرِfor aid لاnot يُخذَلُis abandoned
A trustworthy man whose neighbor is not wronged,
A brother of loyalty, his neighbor is not wronged,
And whoever calls on him for aid is not abandoned.
His caller to victory is not abandoned.
إِذاwhen حارَبَwages war القَومُthe people خَلّىhe leaves الفِجاجَthe passes

يَسُدُّblocks مَذاهِبَهاtheir routes القَسطَلُbattle-dust
When the people wage war, he leaves the passes
When the people fight, he empties the trenches,
With battle-dust blocking their paths.
Closing its conduits with his banners.
وَخَلّىand he leaves الرِماحَthe spears أَنابِيبَهاtheir shaft-sections

And he leaves the shafts of the spears
And he empties the spears’ tubes,
With a stream beside every section.
If each tube is a stream.
كَأَنَّas though السُيُوفَthe swords وَقَدand already خُضِّبَتhave been stained

As though the swords, now stained,
It is as if the swords, once stained with blood,
Were the glow of fire when first kindled.
Are the teeth of fire when first ignited.
صَوارِمُkeen swords عَوَّدَهاhe accustomed them أَنto تُهانَbe neglected

Keen blades he has accustomed to neglect,
Swords he disciplined so as not to be disgraced,
So they are neither whetted nor polished.
They are not to be trampled or polished.
فَوارَحمَتاso alas, what pity! لِبِلادِfor the lands of العِديthe foes
إِذاwhen قَلِقُواthey are troubled وَإِذاand when زُلزِلُواthey are shaken
Oh, pity the lands of the foes,
So may the country of enemies have mercy
When they are troubled and shaken!
When they are anxious and when they tremble,

What a lion of battle they have roused,
For which vain fighting did they provoke
And what a firebrand's blaze they have kindled!
And which firebrand did they ignite?

And in the fortress of al-Jisr are men
In the fortress of the bridge are people being trampled,
Whose foreheads will soon be trampled underfoot.
Soon their foreheads will be stomped by feet.
رِجالٌmen تَرِفُّflutter مَناياهُمُtheir deaths
عَلَيهِمover them كَماas رَفرَفَfluttered الأَجدَلُthe falcon
Men whose deaths flutter
Men whom their resting places excelled,
Over them as the falcon flutters.
Upon them, as the partridge fluttered.

I can almost see them, food for the beasts of the wastes;
It is as if I see them, the food of the wild beast,
So may you enjoy your portion, O she-hyena!
So feast, O hyena!
فَنِعمَso excellent is الدِماءُthe blood الَّتيthat تُمتَرىis milked out

وَنِعمَand excellent is اللُحُومُthe flesh الَّتيthat تُؤكَلُis eaten
How fine the blood that is milked out,
Excellent are the blood being bought
And how fine the flesh that is eaten!
And the flesh being consumed.

By my life, the slain man's mother will know
By my life, the mother of the slain will know
Tomorrow what a son she will lose.
Tomorrow which son she mourns.
تَسَنَّمتَهُمyou surmounted them فيon ذُرىthe heights of شاهِقٍa towering mountain

You surmounted them on a towering mountain's heights,
You made them ascend a lofty summit,
Upon whose back the wild ass slips.
Toppling onto its slope those despaired.
فَأَينَwhere, then الذَهابُgoing وَلاand no مَذهَبٌway out

Where, then, can you go, with no way out
So where to go and no destination for you
For you in the land, nor any refuge?
In the countries, and no shelters?
فَلاso do not تَطلُبُواseek العَفوَpardon عَنfor جُرمِكُمyour crime

Do not seek pardon for your crime,
Do not ask for pardon for your crime,
For your best pardon is the sword.
For the best of your pardons is the sword.
أَباO father of صالِحٍSalih لاmay not عَدَتكَpass you by السُعُودُgood fortune

Abu Salih, may good fortune never pass you by,
O Abu Salih, neither fortune failed you,
Nor may the time to come betray you.
Nor did advancing time betray you.
هَنِيئاًmay you rejoice بِماin what خَوَّلتَكَhave granted you السُيوُفُthe swords

May you rejoice in what the swords have granted you,
Congratulations for what the swords entrusted you,
And what your slender spears have given you.
And what your spears made blunt for you.
رَأَوكَthey found you صَحِيحَtrue to عُقُودِthe pledges of الوَفاءِloyalty
فِيماin what تَقُولُyou say وَماand what تَفعَلُyou do
They found you true to your pledges of loyalty,
They saw you true to loyalty’s necklaces,
In what you say and what you do.
In what you say and what you do.
فَماso not اِستَعظَمُواthey deemed too great فِيكَfor you ماwhat خَوَّلُواthey granted

وَلاnor استَكثَرُواthey deemed excessive فِيكَfor you ماwhat أَرسَلُواthey sent
So they did not deem their gifts to you too great,
They did not consider great what they entrusted you,
Nor deem what they sent you excessive.
Nor did they consider much what they dispatched to you.
وَقَدand indeed طَوَّقُوكَthey adorned your neck بِأَطواقِهِمwith their collars

And they have adorned you with their collars,
They crowned you with their crowns,
But the imam's is the finest among them.
But its most splendid was yours.
بَقِيتَmay you remain لَناfor us وَلِأَهلِand for the people of البِلادِthe land

May you remain for us and for the people of the land,
You remained for us and the country’s people,
And for these people who petition you.
And these servants who ask.
فَأَنتَfor you are السِراجُthe lamp إِذاwhen أَظلَمُواthey enter darkness

وَأَنتَand you are الرَبيعُspring إِذاwhen أَمحَلُواthey suffer drought
For you are the lamp when they enter darkness,
You are the lamp when they are in darkness,
And you are spring when they suffer drought.
And you are the spring after their barrenness.
لَقَدindeed أَدرَكُواthey attained فِيكَthrough you ماwhat حاوَلُواthey sought

They have indeed attained through you what they sought,
They attained through you what they attempted,
And by your bounty gained what they hoped for.
And gained by your bounty what they hoped for.
