May you be spared your foes and shielded from death.

For you have never ceased to make generosity's abode flourish.

For I have never seen your equal lead steeds

draped in the garments of war.

You seem to yearn for the day of battle,

as one parched with thirst longs for water.

    فَهَذي السُيوفُ فَأَينَ العِدى

    And your sword has annihilated the foes in the lands;

so here are the swords—where, then, are the foes?

May the kings be your ransom against calamities,

even if they are not worthy to serve as ransom.

For you are more generous than Hatim

in your right hand's bounty, and farther-reaching than he.
