سَرىjourneyed by night طَيفُthe dream-phantom of هِندٍHind وَالمَطِيُّand the mounts بِناwith us تَسريtravel by night
فَأَخفىso it hid دُجىthe darkness of لَيلٍnight وَأَبدىand it revealed سَناthe radiance of فَجرِdawn
Hind's dream-phantom came by night as our mounts carried us through the night,
So it hid the night's darkness and revealed dawn's radiance.
خَلِيلَيَّmy two friends فُكّانيrelease me, you two مِنَfrom الهَمِّcare وَأَركَباand ride, you two
فِجاجَthe broad paths of المَوامِيthe wastelands الغُبرِdusty فيamid النُوَبِcalamities الغُبرِdark
My two friends, free me from care, and ride
The broad paths of dusty wastes amid dark calamities,
إِلىtoward مَلِكٍa king مِنfrom عامِرٍAmir لَوif تَمَثَّلَتtook visible form

Toward a king of Amir—were they to take form,
His virtues would suffice in place of the radiant stars.

Whenever we praise him, they turn
Toward him—the mounts, listening intently to Jabr.
وَفَوقَand atop سَريرِthe throne of المُلكِkingship مِنfrom آلِthe house of صالِحٍSalih
فَتىًa young man وَلَدَتهُbore him أُمُّهُhis mother لَيلَةَthe night of القَدرِthe Decree
And upon the royal throne, from the house of Salih,
Is a young man whose mother bore him on the Night of Decree.
فَتىًa young man وَجهُهُhis face أَبهىmore splendid مِنَthan البَدرِthe full moon مَنظَراًin appearance
وَأَخلاقُهُand his character أَشهىmore delightful مِنَthan الماءِwater وَالخَمرِand wine
A young man whose face is more splendid to behold than the full moon,
And whose character is more delightful than water and wine.
أَباO father of صالِحٍSalih أَشكُوI complain of إِلَيكَto you نوائِباًmisfortunes
عَرَتنِيbeset me كَماas يَشكُوcomplains النَباتُvegetation إِلىto القَطرِrain
Abu Salih, I complain to you of misfortunes
That have beset me, as plants complain to the rain,
لِتَنظُرَso that you may look نَحوِيtoward me نَظرَةًa glance إِنif نَظَرتَهاyou cast it
إِلىupon الصَخرِrock فَجَّرتَyou would make gush العُيونَthe springs مِنَfrom الصَخرِrock
So that you may look my way with a glance that, if cast
Upon rock, would make springs gush from the rock.
وَفِيand in الدارِthe home خَلفِيbehind me صِبيَةٌchildren قَدalready تَرَكتهُمُI left them
يُطِلُّونَpeer out إِطلالَlike the peering of الفِراخِchicks مِنَfrom الوَكرِthe nest
And at home behind me are children I have left,
Peering out like chicks from the nest.
جَنَيتُI committed a wrong عَلىagainst رُوحِيmy soul بِرُوحيthrough my soul جِنايَةًa wrong
فَأَثقَلتُso I burdened ظَهرِيmy back بِالَّذيwith what خَفَّdeparted lightly مِنfrom ظَهرِيmy back
I have wronged my soul through my own soul,
So I burdened my back with what lightly departed from my back.
فَهَبso bestow هِبَةًa gift يَبقىwill remain عَلَيكَwith you ثَناؤُهاits praise
بَقاءَthe endurance of النُجومِthe stars الطالِعاتِrising الَّتيthat تَسرِيtravel by night
So bestow a gift whose praise will endure for you
As long as the rising stars that journey by night.
عِدادُthe number of الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades مِثلُequals نِصفِhalf عِدادِهمtheir number
وَمَنand whoever نَسلُهُhis offspring ضِعفُtwice as many as الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades مَتىwhen يُثرِيgrows rich
The Pleiades' number equals half their number;
And one whose offspring number twice the Pleiades—when can he grow rich?
وَأَخشىand I fear اللَيالِيthe nights الغادِراتِtreacherous عَلَيهِمُfor them
لِأَنَّbecause اللَياليthe nights غَيرُnot مَأمُونَةِtrustworthy الغَدرِtreachery
And I fear the treacherous nights for them,
For the nights cannot be trusted not to betray.
وَلِيand I have مِنكَfrom you إِقطاعٌa land grant قَدِيمٌold وَحادِثٌand new

And from you I have grants of land, old and new,
Where I have spent part of my life beneath your shade.

I am not denied it, nor is it something
For which I fear a misfortune coming from you.
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I أَبغِيهِI seek it مُلكاًas a possession مُخَلَّداًeverlasting
خُلُودَthe permanence of القَوافِيthe rhymes الباقِياتِenduring عَلىthroughout الدَهرِtime
But I seek it as an everlasting possession,
As enduring as the rhymes that remain through the ages.
