Do you seek composure at farewell?

By your life, that is impossible.

And you hope for life, though lifeless

one becomes when a herald calls for parting.

At Thahmad, while the women's litters head toward

rugged uplands between Thahmad and al-Kurāʿ,

with every guileless maiden swaying softly,

as reeds sway when stirred by the north wind.

I watch her with a downcast gaze,

and send after her a heart bereft of sense.

For before her, I had never seen a sun in a curtained chamber,

nor a radiant moon beneath a veil.

And a woman says, 'Your love for us is deceit,'

and denies my long sorrow and burning anguish.

And had you felt my anguish on the morning of parting,

she would distinguish my sincerity from my deceit.

As the laden camels turn away, I am like

a battle's fallen victim at the sandy bend of al-Ṣirāʿ,

and a wine-drinker whom it has overcome—

a crimson wine with scarlet radiance,

long-aged, dating from the era of ʿĀd,

as though its bubbles were the sloughed skins of vipers.

O you who forsake me, how long must my anguish last

for you, and how long must I follow you?

And how long will love cling to my heart,

while I scarcely turn back from its seduction?

And how often, in any land, we find no

    rest between parting and reunion.

So a day of meeting you is spent in joy,

and a day of parting from you in dread.

So I am never free of passion for you,

nor ever free of yearning for you.

May Salmā's dwelling at al-Kurāʿ be watered

by a cloud of ceaseless rain from al-Dhirāʿ's season,

and a thundercloud whose lightning is like

the gleam of al-Muʿizz's fire upon the heights.

A youth whose heights men strive to reach,

yet every striver falls short of his heights.

And people rise a short span in honor,

yet he rises an armspan above their height.

The sail of glory is spread above him,

and the bounty of that sail is laid open.

May God guard him, a magnanimous king,

a shepherd for us and for the domain of Islam.

I bid him farewell, with arrows in my heart,

by your father's life, from this farewell.

And I depart, gaining nothing from life,

and how could life be of benefit to me?

May God reward you with good for your favors,

and for graciously retaining me and favoring me.

For since I sought your bounty with rhymes,

I have blessed my coming to you and my quest for bounty.

And I have divorced the kings in every land,

three times, with no lawful return to them.

So live on, with all people's deaths announced to you,

and may no death-herald ever announce your death.
