Do not think the grayness of my head is decrepitude;
Do not think my grey hair is due to old age,
It only whitened when the locks turned white.
Rather it turned white when troubles whitened.
وَلاand do not تَظُنّيsuppose نُحولَwasting الجِسمِof the body مِنfrom أَلَمٍpain

فَالهَمُّ يَفعَلُ مالا يَفعَلُ الأَلَمُ
Nor think the body's wasting comes from pain;
And do not assume my slim body is out of pain,
For anguish does what pain does not.
Worry can do what pain cannot do.
كَتَمتُI concealed حُبَّكِlove for you دَهراًfor an age ثُمَthen بُحتُI spoke openly بِهِabout it

I concealed my love for you for an age, then revealed it;
I concealed my love for you for a time then confessed it,
And no lover's secret remains concealed.
The secret of every lover cannot be concealed.

You tormented my heart with passion—and no wonder
I tortured my heart with passion yet no wonder,
That water should make one choke, though it is cold, ice-cold.
That brackish water turned sweetish when boiled.

It showed through only when illness wasted me.
When illness made me reveal what was hidden.

Withhold your union, or bestow it on me;
Favor me with your union or grant me the favor,
For possession and deprivation are one to me.
To me, ecstasy and non-existence are the same.

How ugly is honor soiled with indecency,
Which the tablet records or the pen sets down.
Scribbled on a tablet or traced with a pen.

And beauty—there is no beauty in a face you contemplate
Beauty is no beauty on a face you look at,
If character and disposition do not match it.
If morals and manners are not similar.

Youth has a structure perfected at thirty,
For you by thirty years, then crumbles.
Then it crumbles thereafter and fades away.

Whoever holds firm to the rope of God,
Is indeed holding fast to the cords of God.
Is holding firmly to a rope that never breaks.

Blessed of countenance, God fashioned his clay
Blessed is he whose essence God moulded,
From a clay of which bounty and generosity are made.
From a clay of generosity and munificence.

It shows you an intrepid knight in his sovereign’s tent,
Of the house of Mirdas, his nose high with pride.
From the House of Mirdas sniffing his perfumes.

When he settled there, he freed al-Jazira from the need
He enriched the peninsula when he stayed in it,
To have rain-stars and steady showers watched for on its behalf.
So it had no need for dews and rainwater.

And God, through him, made the people of the two Raqqas secure
And God gave security to the people of the two soft lands through him,
So neither oppression nor darkness could tyrannize over them.
Against injustice or any tyranny befalling them.

His side is a meadow and his companionship,
A sanctuary from the calamity they fear.
A sanctuary protecting them from dreaded mischief.

The enemies reckoned with him, but he disproved their reckoning,
When they met, as oppression's billows crashed together.
When they met, amidst swirling clouds of injustice.

He hurled lions at them; had he hurled them
He pelted them with lions, had he pelted them,
At a mountain's pillars, no supports would have stood firm.
With mountain pillars, those pillars would not stand firm.

And stalwarts like predatory lions having nothing,
Forest lairs or thickets except their armor.
But smooth Indian swords and no scabbards.

Battle's forelocks have grayed because of them, for they are hardened men;
The temples of war turned white from them, so they are valiant,
And their timber does not yield when they are tested.
And their spears when reddened do not get broken.

The awe he inspires makes them forget swords,
In place of swords whose sheaths are heads.
Whose scabbards are mountain peaks.

Until the issue became confused between them,
The company recognized who they were among those present.
The people saw who of those present they were.

In a narrow battlefield where venomous death was adorned,
In a tight spot, death was decked out alluringly by it,
And the cheek-straps grayed from what the bridles shook off.
And the excuse was masked by that which blots out traces.

Had anyone but the son of Fakhr al-Mulk fought them,
Had he fought other than the son of the pride of kings,
No kinship or blood-tie would have held him back from them.
Kinship would have not prevented him from them, nor womb relations.

They fought only a noble chief in whom find refuge
Rather, they fought a generous tribe taking refuge,
A noble nature, wholesome flesh and blood.
Of noble tents, good meat and blood.

The House of Mirdas is the best of people whether settling or travelling,
Or stay, whether they grow rich or have nothing.
Whether staying or perishing, being rich or destitute.

They do not refrain from doing good if asked,
Nor forsake forbearance when they take offense.
Nor conceal clemency if they are angry.

They learned every virtue from their own souls,
They learned every merit from their souls,
So no one can add knowledge beyond what they already know.
So no knowledge can be added above what they know.

Had the son of Abi Sulma seen their virtues,
Harim would have seemed ungenerous to him.
None would be generous in his eyes but they.

And had Hatim al-Ta'i seen their excellence,
And had Hatem Al-Ta’iyy seen their superiority,
He would have said, 'Generosity shone forth from the house of Mirdas.'
He would say generosity began with the House of Mirdas.

They make little of the greatness of their station;
They belittle the mighty due to their status,
So whenever they lower their standing, they grow greater.
So the more they make light of their own worth, the greater they become.

Magnanimous lords, they escorted my renown with theirs;
Commoners publicized my reputation through mention of them,
So I became known by the mark they set upon me.
So I became better known by the brand they imprinted.

A load whose like nations impose on one like me:
With a load the like of which nations similar to me carry.

Indeed, I weighed all kings against you,
I have weighed with You all kingdoms in their entirety,
And neither Arabs nor non-Arabs equaled you.
Yet neither Arabs nor non-Arabs match You.

The doctrine of transmigration proved true to its adherents
The doctrine of the proponents of abrogation is not sound to them,
Only because you yourself are all mankind.
Except that You alone are all of mankind combined.

You gathered all the generosity found in all people;
You brought together whatever generosity exists among all people,
So excellence in you is gathered together and shared out.
So superiority with You is an aggregate and apportioned.

I would ransom with my life that precious soul, whose custom
I ransom with my soul the precious soul whose trait is,
Is that no deed or pledge of his is reproached.
That no deed or blame can be attributed to him.

I visit him in passionate love, if my sight,
In my stead, with neither leg nor foot walking for me.
Moves away from me but neither foot nor leg walks.

If I could, no eyelid would blink shut,
Him save across my cheek—the quick-striding, swift-trotting camels.
Except my cheek rubbing against his smooth cheek.

In honor of one noble in nature: none have seemed great
Out of reverence for the generous owner of the tent, I exalt
To me except his—the favors and blessings.
Him alone in my eyes, with favors and bounties.

So I will thank him while alive and thank him,
On my behalf, when I lie buried, by my crumbling bones.
When I am buried in the ground and my limbs decay.
