Cease your reproach; torment is enough for me.

Or try some of what I endure, and blame me.

You now dwell in Yabrin's sands; have

the sands of Yabrin learned that longing wears me away?

I love beautiful women, but fear of God restrains me

from passion, while wide eyes entice me.

What ails Asma, that she puts me off with her promises?

    Is every beautiful woman fickle?

    وَشابَ رَأسِي فَصارَ اليَومَ يُقصِيني

    Youth used to bring me close to Hind;

but my head has grayed, and now it keeps me away.

O Hind, black hair is suited to the

world, and white hair to religion.

I am not a man given to backbiting the noble,

nor is tale-bearing in my nature or my creed.

Leave me alone to struggle with life in solitude,

for part of what I know of people is enough for me.

No harm has come to me—God's defense shields me—from

one who spends the night tearing me down, for God builds me up.

    وَسَيبُ نُعماكَ إِنَّ السَيلَ يُرضِيني

    And I do not care, though the turns of time displease me;

and the outpouring of your bounty—indeed, that flood pleases me.

Abu Salama, live and remain safe, ally of lofty glory

and nobility linked to the star's radiance.

May your enemies be made wretched; I long to pledge allegiance to you.

And your foes have their creed concerning you, and I have mine.
