Behold the rain that fell in drops,
Look at the rain that dripped down,
and its namesake, Ghayth, who followed after it:
and its namesake, Ghayth, who followed it:
مُتَشابِهَينboth alike نَدىًbounty وَمَكرُمَةًand generosity
مُتَخالِفَينِboth different وَنِعمَand how excellent ماwhat اِختَلَفاthe two differed in
the two alike in dew-soft bounty and noble generosity,
alike in bounty and generosity,
yet different—and blessed is the way they differ!
yet different—and how fine their difference!
هَذاthis one أَنالَbestowed فَدامَso endured نائِلُهُhis bounty
فِيناamong us وَذاكَand that one أَلَثَّlingered وَاِنصَرَفاand departed
This one bestowed, and his gift endured
This one gave, and his bounty endured
among us; that one persisted in raining, then passed away.
among us; that one lingered and departed.
وَلَّتdeparted وَماand did not وَقَفتremain مَكارِمُهُits bounties

وَالحَمدُand praise لِلغَيثِto Ghayth الَّذيwho وَقَفاremained
The raincloud departed, but his noble gifts did not cease;
Its bounties passed away and did not remain;
all praise to Ghayth—the Ghayth who remained.
and praise belongs to Ghayth, who stayed.

How lovely our gathering, how radiant its delight,
Oh, the beauty of our gathering and its splendor,
graced by an illustrious man surpassing all description!
with a radiant man surpassing what was described!

The cloud descended upon the marble, and has
turned all around you into a fresh, untrodden meadow,

lush and smiling whenever a sidelong glance comes
lush, smiling whenever
from the cloud’s eye, making marvels spring forth.
the cloud's eye is stung to tears, making wonders sprout.

O Ghayth, rain of bounty, pouring and streaming,
and springtime of Jūj, prodigally fertile!
and spring of bounty [uncertain reading], lavishly fertile!

passing evening and morning in ease,
fearing neither calamity nor injustice.
fearing neither calamity nor injustice.
