وأَيُّ عِلقٍ تخطتهُ يَدُ الزَّمَنِ
Time cannot be trusted with a noble man.
Time does not spare the free man from misfortune,
And what treasure has the hand of time passed over?
And which bond has the hand of fate not severed?

كأنَّ آدمَ لمن يَسكُن إلى سَكَن
Oblivion overtakes the world and its dwellers,
Prosperity comes upon the world and its inhabitants
As though Adam had never found repose with a companion.
As if Adam had not dwelt in it before.

O you who weep for loved ones parted by distance,
O you who weep over the separation of friends in far off lands,
Why did you not weep for the soul's parting from the body?
Why not weep over the soul's departure from the body?

وانحاز عَنواً وخلَّى الطينَ في الكفَنِ
A light was bound in clay until an appointed term,
A light imprisoned in clay for a time
Then withdrew under compulsion, leaving the clay in the shroud.
Then it withdrew haughtily and left the clay in its shroud.

Like a bird in a snare, rising toward its goal,
Like a bird trapped in a snare that longs for escape
Until it freed itself from sickness and grime.
Until it is freed from illness and chains.

If their union did not accord with God's good pleasure,
If their meeting was not by God's decree,
Then what a bargain, concluded in rancor!
What a wretched deal struck in loss!

Oh, how sharply they parted after they had embraced!
Oh how they parted after embracing,
As though theirs had been a companionship clouded by ill will.
As if their companionship was built on smoke.

And many a night-traveler, seeking a face that would gladden him,
Many a person journeys happily to a destination,
Arrived when pasture had already grown over the dung-marked ruins.
Only to find pasture grown over ruins.

He came to God without hearing or sight,
To call to right guidance or lead along the proper path.
Calling to guidance or following tradition.

Each day brings a parting—no one endures—
Every day brings separation with no permanence,
From a generous companion or a worthy lord.
From a generous companion or dignified chief.

The loss of those who passed away exhausted Abu Hasan;
I lament Abu Hasan for those who passed are gone,
Who, then, can help us bear what exhausted Abu Hasan?
Who will be for us like the one I lament, Abu Hasan?

He was the last of a company that had passed away,
He was the remnant among a people now extinct,
And stirred that generation to boundless sorrow.
So whatever that era contained of sadness overflowed.

He is counted as one, yet multitudes are within his robes,
He is counted an individual though hosts are in his robes,
Of every man of ample virtue and every man of keen insight.
Of every refined nature, submerged in knowledge and wit.

Indeed, He who created us feels the loss when one is absent,
Through his life is grievous to lose and see depart.
His life is precious, grieved for when lost.

Who will serve kings when their judgment grows light,
When the ardour of kings fades,
With composure to counter that rashness?
Who can resist that recklessness with composure?

O Yunus of solace, in our loneliness we now
O solace of intimacy, our desolation makes us complain of estrangement,
Lament estrangement, though we have not left our homeland.
Though we are not far from home.

And O you who obeyed every command in Islam, never defiant,
Entrusted with Islam in every affair.
Trustworthy in all matters, adhering to law and tradition.

How many an inscrutable crisis, like the sea's tumult,
How many tangled schemes, like the heaving ocean,
You dispelled with a keen sword drawn from eloquence!
You disentangled with an Indian sword of sharp tongue.

A mountain of awe in great trials; yet when
Restraint's stronghold, though seclusion might pull
Solitude drew his reins, it shook an idol's summits.
Its reins and shake a galaxy of fair ladies.

Honour the cause and you will meet the Messenger through it,
At the five recurring prayers, in obligation and tradition.
Due to five incumbent religious duties and prophetic traditions.

What a splendid path, with lofty palaces upon it
Not to mention the exemplary moral code perfuming palaces,
For guidance, from one high mansion to another.
Guidance, from peak to peak, from lofty dune to dune.

From every valley of piety, the cloud is watered through him,
From every valley of piety the clouds water it,
Then pours forth milk, its udder brimming.
So the Pleiades shine at dawn with milk.

Through you Muḍar attained grace in its lineages,
And your glory is rooted in the stock of Yemen.
The origin of your glory being the seed of Yemen.

From a state surrounded protectively by the Helpers,
In a soaring structure, lofty in pillars and summits.
With towering pillars sublime and impregnable.

Of those who gave shelter and who gave support,
They gave refuge and gave victory,
From faith's sheltering shade, not from the ember of strife.
Not out of political chaos but religious duty.

Spare yourself any other looking or listening.
Turn your gaze and ear away in disinterest.

Nothing compares to their discourse, not blossoms or fruits,
Nor any price for the treasures of those pearls.
Nor is that precious pearl matched in price.

I say this, though the bounty of his nobility remains among us;
I say this though we fall short of their merit,
I ask God's forgiveness with all my inward and outward being.
I ask God's forgiveness openly and in secret.

Muhammad and Mughith—what an excellent recompense!
Muḥammad and Mughīth, excellent substitutes,
They are the offspring of that steadily pouring rain-cloud.
Both descendants of that brilliant, piercing ancestor.

Textbook examples of innate and learned virtue.

No sooner did their love take root than they tied
Their wraps, with his chosen strength and favors:
A bond through their choice of hands and favours.

Knowledge, clemency, welcoming visitors and generosity
For visitors, and a lowered gaze upon a perch.
To guests, overlooking slips and flaws.

And water the resting-places around that dwelling.
And cultivate the land around that quarter.

Intercede and make the land moist with blessings,
For what an excellent scout of that fertile land and good fortune!
For excellent are that province's guide and Yemen’s.

Of a noble resting-place, held in pledge until Resurrection Day.
A noble resting place till the Day of Resurrection.

Then how much loamier is your soil in paradise gardens!
