يا سائلاً سَفَهَ الشَّطَط

يا سائلاً سَفَهَ الشَّطَط

إذ نالَ زائلةَ الخُطَط

إذ نالَ زائلةَ الخُطَط

O seeker of the folly of excess,

O questioner, how foolish your digression

having attained fleeting offices,

When acquiring vanishing schemes

هَلا صَرَفتَ الفَضلَ مِن

هَلا صَرَفتَ الفَضلَ مِن

هُجرِ المقالَةِ والغَلَط

هُجرِ المقالَةِ والغَلَط

why did you not curb the excess of

Why not spend excellence instead

foul speech and error,

Of shunning conversation and mistakes?

وَخَشيت مُلتَقِطا علي

وَخَشيت مُلتَقِطا علي

كَ موكَّلاً بالملتَقَط

كَ موكَّلاً بالملتَقَط

and fear a gleaner set over

And fear picking on me

you, charged with what is gleaned?

As if entrusted with pickings

لا تحقِرَنَّ صغيرةً

لا تحقِرَنَّ صغيرةً

إنَّ البُحورَ مِنَ النُّقَط

إنَّ البُحورَ مِنَ النُّقَط

Never belittle a small thing:

Do not belittle something small

indeed, the seas are made of drops.

The oceans are made of drops
