وكنتُ إذا ما حاجَةٌ حالَ دونَها

And whenever a need was thwarted by

When a need arose that was hindered

A day and a night that offered no excuse,

حَمَلتُ على ظَهرِ القَضاءِ مَلامَها

حَمَلتُ على ظَهرِ القَضاءِ مَلامَها

ولم أُلزمِ الإخوانَ ذَنبَ زَماني

ولم أُلزمِ الإخوانَ ذَنبَ زَماني

I would lay its blame upon the back of fate,

I blamed fate for opposing it

And not blame my brethren for the fault of my time.

And did not burden my brothers with the guilt of my time
