And a friend—no friend is his equal—

steadfast, patient through the passing nights.

I never met him in hardship but it turned

to ease, and my distress gave way to joy.

And how could I not thank one whose good fortune

and affection drove doom away from me,

after it had made me a morsel

around which the throats of graves had closed?

And how often—may God protect him—has he made

a trade in whose like one never loses!

God sent him, when my pledge was almost

forfeited to the people of the Psalms.

Until we divided the two lots of parting:

his was to stay; my saddle's, to cross.

And the Tigris came between us:

    he was al-Ghumaysa, and I was al-Abur.
