Ah, turn aside to the beloved's resting place and offer greetings.

And pitch camp, for the caravan is not camping.

And say to her, for love of whom the heart is crazed:

Ah, in God's cause is the lovesick one's soul.

And nothing has stirred deep-seated longing like a dwelling

Where every meaning of longing is expressed.

And never has my eye beheld a place where you dwelt,

Nor a familiar haunt, without my shedding my blood there.

And those dwellings have left me not a tear,

Though my heart pours through the tear ducts.

And nothing drew forth this lament but a song,

    Whose superiority every song acknowledges.

And she whose words bewitch has in her melodies

The intoxication of forbidden Babylonian wine.

So, O precious treasure I have been robbed of,

Your place in my heart remains your place—know this.

    وَصَوتُكِ في سَمعي وَذِكراكِ في فَمي

    And your form is in my eye, and your fragrance in my hand;

And your voice is in my hearing, and remembrance of you on my lips.

May it gladden you that a plight which grieves me has pleased you:

My sleeplessness, my downcast gaze, and my extreme suffering.

And enough for her who makes one weep with a young gazelle's eyelids

Is that I weep for her with a lion's eyelids.

I endure the night's blackness, my head unpillowed,

And meet dawn's whiteness without dozing.
