We tell you of our state, all that has come to pass.

So what was kept secret from you has become public.

We remained under wine's sway, reaping pleasure

from life; through it, Time's vicissitudes chose to forget us.

And al-Qaffāṣ came before us, displaying his magic,

and what a companion al-Qaffāṣ is, and how gracious!

When his strings accompany his melodies,

you remain drunk, even if you have drunk no wine.

And among the drinking companions I have one who cheers me and plies me,

when they are heedless, with roses, wine, and sweet basil.

And his words have scattered a garden's blossoms,

when they string together beauty, pearls, and coral.

My heart is shaken whenever he sways his side,

by love's anguish, which sets my inmost being aflame with longing and sorrow.

And he had been harsh and hard-hearted, so I charmed him

with verse, which is lawful magic; and so he softened.

Indeed, this world is nothing but wine and a companion,

who sometimes kills you and sometimes brings you to life.
