    فأقصَرَ واستحيى مُعنَّىً مُضلَّلُ

    This dawn shone forth, or almost did;

So a tormented, deluded man desisted and grew ashamed.

The herald of gray hair came to him before its time,

So he forsook his pleasures, forced to hurry.

Welcome, then, to a guest! My levity said to his solemnity:

"Be gentle, for when you alight, I depart."

May God water and tend youth, for it

Is, despite what it wrought, a veil of merriment let fall.

My life for him whom separation's exile has carried far away,

And for him who is pictured in my gaze and my thoughts,

And for him in whose love my heart persisted; I was beguiled

By his favor, so my heart neither forgets nor changes.

I sobered, yet a remnant of love for him remains with me,

Encompassing all lovers, with some to spare.

I marveled at an eye that had been stained red with my blood:

Yet only his cheek turned red, while his eyes were kohl-dark.

And I had not known, before our glances met,

That a glance is an arrow and a means of death.
