    وكل ذي أمل يسعى إلى أمد

    Indeed, affairs unfold according to the decrees of fate.

    And everyone with hope strives toward an end.

  2. جادَ الزمان على هذا وضنّ على

    هذا فأصبح لا يخلو من الكمدِ

    Time was generous to this one and miserly toward

    this other, who thus was never free of grief.

  3. إنّ الأمور على الأقدار جارية

    وكل ذي املٍ يسعى إلى أمدِ

    Indeed, affairs unfold according to the decrees of fate.
