    How long can the yearning lover hold on to patience?

    When avoidance lasts too long, it becomes estrangement.

    Would you, then—oh, may I be your ransom—care for a friend

    Whose affection you have tested in secret and openly?

    وإن صارمتَ عدُّ اليومَ شهرا

    If you keep him company, he counts a month as a day;

    And if you sever ties, he counts a day as a month.

    Let us gather blossoms from the gardens of companionship,

    And quench embers from the blaze of longing.

    And let the third and second strings sound together,

    So we live in delight and die intoxicated.
