My share of this world is the affection of a noble man.

I adore him in secret and serve him openly.

May goodness be his: if he permits, I speak without reproach.

And if he refuses, I fall silent about him, seeking no excuse.

I sought from him a noble bride of his love,

And gave of my gratitude—what a precious bridal gift!

So he bowed his head, uttered not a letter, and did not return

A reply of his to me, in verse or prose.

And silence in this setting does not accord with custom,

For I did not seek his affection as a virgin bride.

For if he has led her as a bride to every suitor but me,

Then he has not seen my equal in loyalty or kindness.

And if a response should come from him to me,

I shall excuse the former and not be ungrateful for the latter.
