I bested the blades in your defense, though they are stubborn foes,

with clashing whose every flash has thunder,

with blue spearheads that see what lies behind the ribs,

though from their weeping they are inflamed eyes.

I left whoever brandished the spearheads to his own judgment,

and said: Ease and plentiful living are for others.

And night's wing flew away from me with a falcon,

which, whenever the blades overflow, has a draught among them.

The lines of its hilt gleam; when it travels by night,

the deserts betray its night journey, though the night is pitch-black.

Did I now, then, when it had tired of me and I of it—

a quest whose attainment ignoble Time had thwarted—

and the years had laid eggs upon my head and hatched them,

and I had no power to loosen or bind affairs—

hope that Hims would yield to my request?

And no wonder: even hard stone may sweat.

    فَمُذ توجَدُ الجُعلان لَم ينفق الوردُ

    And the fault in that is mine—I did wrong—not hers;

for since dung beetles exist, roses have found no market.
