رُوَيدَكَtake your time أَيُّهاO الدَهرُTime الخَؤونُthe treacherous
سَتَأكُلُناwill devour us وَإِيّاكَand you المَنونُdeath
Easy now, O treacherous Time!
Death will devour us and you.
تعلّلناlull us الأَمانيhopes وَهيَand they are زورٌfalsehood
وَتَخدَعُناand deceive us اللَياليthe nights وَهيَand they are خونُtreacherous
Hopes lull us, though they are falsehood,
And the nights deceive us—they are treacherous.
وَكَمand how many غَرَّتthey beguiled بِزبرجِهاwith their glitter قُروناgenerations
فَماso not أَبقَتthey spared وَلاnor بَقَتِsurvived القُرونُthe generations
And how many generations they have beguiled with their glitter!
So they spared none, nor did the generations endure.
فُجِعتُI was bereaved بِزاهِرٍof a radiant man مِنfrom سِرِّthe noblest stock فهرٍFihr
كَبَدرِlike the full moon التَمِّfullness هالَتهُhis halo عرينُa lion's lair
I was bereft of a radiant man of Fihr's noblest stock,
Like the full moon, his halo a lion's lair;
بِأَروَعَof a splendid man مَلءfilling عينِthe eye الحُسنِof beauty قيداًa fetter
إِذاwhen أَخَذَتtook مَجاريهاtheir courses العُيونُthe eyes
A splendid man, filling beauty's eye, a fetter for the gaze,
When eyes followed their courses;
طَويلlong الباعِreach ناديهhis assembly رَزينُdignified
Radiant in honor, expansive in his endeavors,
Long of reach, his assembly dignified.
سَمتrose فَوقَabove السَماءِheaven بِهِwith him ظُهورٌbacks (ancestral loins)
وَماand not حَطَّتهُbrought him low إِذwhen حَطَّتbrought down بُطونُwombs
Ancestral loins raised him above heaven,
Nor did wombs abase him when they brought him forth.
فَأَنضَبَتِso drained dry المَناياdeaths مِنهُfrom him بَحراًa sea
جَواريهِits vessels صُفونٌpoised steeds لاnot سَفينِships
So death drained dry a sea in him,
Whose vessels were poised steeds, not ships;
وَأَغمضَتِand concealed البَسيطَةُthe earth مِنهُfrom him نَصلاًa blade
طَوابِعُهُits forgers قُيولٌprinces لاnot قُيونُsmiths
And the earth buried, in him, a blade,
Whose forgers were princes, not smiths.
مَضىdeparted مَنhe who لَوif سَبَقتُI had gone first لماwould not تَعَزّىfound consolation
وَلاnor جَفَّتdried لَهُfor him بَعديafter me جُفونُeyelids
Gone is he who, had I gone first, would not have found consolation,
Nor would his eyelids have dried after me.
وَأَبقَتنيand left me يَدُthe hand الأَيّامِof the days فَرداًalone
كَماjust as غَدَرَتacted treacherously بِيُسراهاtoward its left hand اليَمينُthe right hand
And the hand of days left me alone,
As the right hand betrayed its left.
وَهَلand can يبقىremain عَلىthrough غِيَرِthe reversals اللَياليof the nights
شَفيقٌa loving friend أَوor شَقيقٌa full brother أَوor قَرينُa companion
And through the nights' reversals, can there remain
A loving friend, a full brother, or a companion?
