A smile came to you from the break of dawn,

And the scowl of deep darkness cleared away.

The night is mourned by the call to prayer, while

At dawn the singing bird of the bān tree has sung.

The tears of night’s dew fashion eyes

With which a speckled serpent gazes from the waters of the Tigris.

O my two companions, between the Ṣarāt and the Tigris,

Both the fortunate one and the lovesick one bade the bond farewell.

Is there in your glances—which are only a turn of the eyes—

Flowers on green hills, or stars?

White ones, as though the edges of a garden had smiled

While al-Simāk and al-Mirzam embroidered its mantle.

    مِلءُ النَواظِرِ سَيرهُنَّ تَوَهُّمُ

    Swift steeds bore us through the leaves of darkness;

Their course fills the eyes, yet seems almost imagined.

    وَإِذا غَدَت فَالصُبحُ مِنها أَدهُمُ

    When they travel by night, the night turns white through them;

When they go forth by day, the morning turns dark through them.

Each one is light upon the rein, as though it were

The soul of a yearning lover beset by reproachers.

    وَالبيضُ تَشهَدُ وَالصَوارِمُ تَحكُمُ

    Between me and fate lies a day like that one;

White blades bear witness, and sharp swords give judgment.

Among those present are ears that serve as witnesses,

And among the spearheads are tongues that speak.

Affection for you, O son of Muḥammad, has compelled my tongue—

An affection that cannot be hidden when love is concealed.

It is a love both inherited and acquired:

Time began with it, and with it time will end.

And to you I send, from the daughter of my inmost heart, a garden

Rich and blooming, borne by reciters eastward and westward.

I filled the horizons of speech and left behind

No gleaming flower or pearl to be strung.

    أَنا خَلفَها بادي العُروقِ مُحَرّمُ

    I urged on camels laden with the choicest figures of eloquence;

Behind them I went, my veins showing, worn thin.

I left the land of the West, though it seemed, because of me,

As if ʿĀlij, Ḍārij, or Zamzam were there.

And in letters I pitied every writer of trifles

Who bleats when the noble breeding camel bellows.

Understanding’s sky has seen its stars set,

While knowledge is revelation and written pages are interpreted.

How splendid you are! Is there any height of glory

With which you are not passionately absorbed?

Your eminence supports me, and your bounty in my hand

Is keen and resolute, like your judgment in adversity.

The breezes of generosity stirred you like a bān tree,

While in steadfastness, Mount Yalamlam stands within your domain.

And the rain cloud learned its generous nature from you:

It pours down, while lightning smiles within it.
