بَليَتْhave decayed عِظامُكَyour bones والأَسَىand sorrow يَتَجَدَّدُis renewed
والصَّبرُand patience يَنْفَدُruns out والبُكاand weeping لاnot يَنْفَدُruns out
Your bones have decayed, while grief forever renews itself;
Your bones have decayed, and sorrow is renewed.
patience runs out, but weeping never does.
And patience runs out, but weeping does not.
ياO غَائِباًabsent one لاnot يُرْتَجَىis hoped for لإِيابِهِfor his return
وَلِقَائِهِand for meeting him حَتَّىuntil القِيَامَةِthe Resurrection مَوْعِدُan appointed time
O absent one, whose return lies beyond all hope,
O absent one, there is no hope of your return,
and whose meeting is appointed for the Resurrection.
nor of an appointed meeting before the Resurrection.
ماhow كانَwould have been أَحْسَنَbeautiful مَلْحَداًa grave ضُمِّنْتَهُyou were laid in it
لوif كانhad ضَمَّembraced أباكَyour father ذَاكَthat الملحَدُgrave
How fair the grave in which you were laid would have been,
How fair the grave in which you were laid would have been,
if only that grave had held your father.
had that grave embraced your father!
بِاليَأسِthrough despair أَسْلوI find solace عَنْكَfor your loss لاnot بِتَجلُّدِيthrough my fortitude
هَيْهاتَfar from it أَيْنَwhere مِنَfrom الحَزينthe sorrowful تَجَلُّدُfortitude
Despair alone consoles me for your loss, not any fortitude of mine.
Through despair I find solace for your loss, not through my fortitude.
Far from it—what fortitude can there be in one so stricken with grief?
Far from it! How can the sorrowful have fortitude?
