أَنْتِyou (feminine) دَائيmy malady وَفيand in يَدَيْكِyour two hands دَوَائيmy cure
يَاO شِفائيmy cure مِنَfrom الجَوىheartache وَبَلائيand my affliction
You are my malady, and in your hands is my cure.
O my cure for heartache, and my affliction!
إِنَّindeed قلبيmy heart يُحِبُّloves مِنْone whom لاnot أُسَمِّيI name
فيin عَنَاءٍanguish أَعْظِمْhow great بِهِit is مِنْas عَناءِanguish
Indeed, my heart loves one whom I do not name,
In anguish—how great an anguish!
كيْفَhow لاnot كيْفَhow أَنْto ألذَّI delight بِعَيْشٍin a life
مَاتَhas died صبريmy patience بهِin it ومَاتَand has died عَزَائيmy solace
How could it be otherwise? How could I delight in a life
In which my patience has died, and my solace has died?
أَيُّهاO you اللّائِمونَreproachers ماذاwhat عَلَيْكمupon you
أَنْthat تَعيشُواyou live وأنْand that أَمُوتَI die بِدائيof my malady
O you who reproach me, what does it matter to you
That you should live and I should die of my malady?
ولَيْسَand is not مَنْwhoever مَاتَdied فَاسْتراحَand so found rest بِمَيْتٍdead
إنماonly الميْتُthe dead one مَيِّتُthe dead one among الأحْيَاءِthe living
And he who dies and finds rest is not truly dead;
Only the dead among the living are truly dead.
